Pathh bhhoola ek aaya musaafir

Though Kishore Kumar is known for being a fun loving individual, he tended to make serious movies as a producer (with the exception a few movies e.g. “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”). “Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein” (1964) was a serious movie which was a labour of love for Kishore Kumar. Serious labours of love like this movie did not have too many takers among movie goer those days and such movies tended to flop at the box office. This movie too failed at the box office.

My all-time favourite Lata-Kishore duet is from the Famina Production’s Fareb (1953) ” Aa, mohabbat ki basti basaayenge hum”, in which the duo are at their soulful best in expressing the pangs of separation of the two lovers, so poignantly captured in Majrooh Sultanpuri’s breath-taking imagery “dekh dharti se aakaash hai kitni door!”

There are many flavors of ‘roothhnaa’ and ‘manaanna’ in Hindi films. There are many songs that we like, which are about one person, lady or the gentleman, one of whom is upset and offended about something, and then the other person will make an effort to placate the emotional storm, sing praises, make promises, make amends and try to get the communications back on track. But did I say, lady and gentleman. Well not always – there are songs that put people of many different relationships and genders and ages, into a song trying to set right the upset moods. I recall the wonderful kids song “Daadi Amma Daadi Amma Maan Jaao. . .” from ‘Gharaana’ (1961), in which two kids are trying to humor and bring laughter to the lips of their grandma, who is offended with the actions and deeds of the generation in between. And I am sure readers will add many more songs of such situations to this list.

When Atul wrote to me in his usual polite way the other day that I must write a post on this song I was taken aback. I have been a (mostly silent) reader of his blog and I have even written a few pieces for it but none for a very long time. Perhaps he thought I might like to do this piece on Don’s “Khaike paan banaraswala” as most of my early pieces were on Amitabh Bachchan’s movies of that era as I am an unabashed AB fan. What he did not know when he wrote to me is that I had another “qualification” for doing this piece; I studied for five years in Banaras.
