#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————

In this post I am presenting a song from the 1966 Bhojpuri movie ‘Loha Singh (Bhojpuri)’.

Regulars on the blog would wonder on my new found love for Bhojpuri songs. Yes, I am enjoying listening to the songs of yesteryear Bhojpuri films that were made from sixties to eighties. ( I like a song from the recent years too, but we will have to wait for that 🙂 ).

Geet Kosh Vol-IV (1961-1970) mentions that the movie ‘Loha Singh-1966’ was directed by Kundan Kumar for Vikramsheel Arts. The cast of this movie had Sujit Kumar, Vijaya Chaudhary, R.S. Kashyap, Sujata, Tiwari, Sheel Kumar, Helen and others.

#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————

The song in this post is from the movie ‘Charnon Ki Daasi-1959’. This movie had made its debut on the blog on 20.08.2020, with its song ‘aajaa re…. dukhiyaa dharti tujhe pukaare’. That remains the only song from this movie in the blog. That post marked the 100th composition of music director Avinash Vyas on the blog. According to an estimate he has composed 437 songs for 52 Hindi movies. The blog has so far covered 145 songs composed by Avinash Vyas.

“Charnon Ki Daasi-1959” was directed by Ramesh Vyas for Chandra Prakash Pictures, Bombay. It was passed by the Censor Board on 27.01.1959. Beni Talwar was the producer of this movie. The cast of this movie had Nirupa Roy, Manhar Desai, Madan Puri, Jagdish Sethi, Leela Mishra, Jayshree Gadkar, Nand Kishore, Rooplakshami, Ameerbai Karnataki, Heera, Suryakant, Poonam, Narbada Shankar, Jagdish Kanwal and others. This movie has six songs written by Bharat Vyas and composed by Avinash Vyas. The singers for this movie are Asha Bhonsle and Manna Dey. Asha Bhonsle sang five solo songs (two of them accompanied by chorus). Manna Dey sang one solo song in this movie. That Manna Dey solo song is the song being presented on the blog today.

As I am nearing my 100th post (currently at 96 posts), I am looking for some songs sung by the big 4 (ie) Mohd. Rafi Saab, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. With over 19K songs posted on the blog it’s quite difficult to find songs by these legends.

However, as I was contemplating on songs to be posted, I found this rare trio sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and two/three lines by Manna Dey.

The song, “Aag Se Aag Bujhale” is from a 1973 movie “Jalte Badan”. This film was produced and directed by Ramanand Sagar.

It starred Kiran Kumar, Kumkum, Padma Khanna, Alka, Sujit Kumar, Dinesh Thakur, Viju Khote, Karan Dewan, Krishan Dhawan, Pradeep Kumar, Jagdish Raj etc.

#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————
(Debutant Movie- Batohi-1949)

I was specifically looking for a devotional song. While going through the Geet Kosh Volume –II (1941-1950), I come across this pleasant surprise which I am presenting here today.

I had come across this title ‘Batohi-बटोही’ in Geet Kosh (1941-1950) in the past under the list of Un-Released movies. (Those days the songs from this movie were not available on internet ).

Searching for word ‘‘Batohi-बटोही’ on this blog yields only one result. This word appears only in the famous song ‘kaun disaa mein leke chalaa re batohiyaa’ from “Nadiya Ke Paar”(1982)

Coming to the movie ‘Batohi-1949’, very less information is available about it in the Geet Kosh. The name of the director for this movie is not given. However some sources on internet mention the name of the director as Kumar Menon. He directed this movie for T.K. Screen Classics. The cast of this movie had Bharat Bhooshan, Indu Pal, Krishna Murari, Beena Pal, Kesari, Shivraj, Sapru and others.

Today, August 24, 2025, is the 25th Remembrance Day of Kalyanji of the music director duo, Kalyanji-Anandji. Surprisingly, none of the two brothers had any inkling of becoming music director when Anandji started his amateure orchestra group doing live variety stage shows in around Girgaum area. Kalyanji, his elder brother joined this group after completion of his boarding school where he had learn to play various musical instruments.

Kalyanji (30/06/1928 0 24/08/2000) was born to Virji Shah, a Jain businessman from Kutch who migrated to Mumbai in early 20th century to set up the grocery and dry-fruit shops in Mangalwadi, Girgaum area of South Mumbai, a predominately Marathi and Gujarati speaking region. While Kalyanji was sent to a boarding school, Anandji, his 5 year junior younger brother joined the local school. In those days, there were many film personalities like V Shantaram, Durga Khote, Shanta Apte, Kikubhai Desai (father of Subhash and Manmohan Desai), some crew members and the film musicians staying in Girgaum. Anandji learnt percussions from a music teacher in lieu of his outstanding grocery bills of his father’s shop. However, his Jain mother did not allow him to bring the Dholak at home because it had animal skin. So, he had to keep his Dholak at his music teacher’s house. Similarly, he gained some working knowledge of Hindustani classical music when he started giving tanpura accomplishment to a Hindustani classical vocalist of his locality during her practice session for which she would give him a chocolate as reward.

Today’s song is from a Mythological story – Shuk Rambha-1953.

It was directed by an expert in such films – Dhirubhai Desai and the music was given by Manna Dey. Yes, you read it right. The MD of this film was Manna Dey. many playback singers secretly desired to become MDs, but only few dared and fewer still succeeded. It was a case of reverse too – like most MDs tried their hands at singing. Some dared and few succeeded.

It is seen that the human mind always craves for something done by his superiors, like actors wish to direct films, directors wish to produce films and producers want to direct films. Remember the Gujarati proverb- ” Jeno kaam teno thaay, bija kare so gotha khaay” ? ( जेनो काम तेनो थाय, बीजा करे सो गोता खाय ). Most artists wisely give up what they feel they are not skilled to do. Manna Dey, G.M.Durrani, S.D.Batish, Snehal Bhatkar, Amirbai Karnataki, Shanta Apte, Kishore Kumar and few others learnt the lesson in short time and went back to their real expertise field !

Today’s song is from the Costume film Raaka-1965.

The film was directed by Kedar Kapoor. Music was by Dattaram- who had been a long time assistant to Shankar-Jaikishen pair and few others for some time. The cast of the film was Dara Singh, Mumtaz, K.N.Singh, Kamal Mehra, Shyam Kumar etc. I was surprised to see the name of K.N.Singh in the film’s cast. One would hardly find the name of this sophisticated villain in such a type of C grade film !

(Lyricist Kavi Pradeep-31)
——————————-

Today is ‘World Friendship Day’!!! In our culture we have several legends and stories on friendship and the most popular and touching of them is the story of Krishn-Sudama from our mythology. We also have many Hindi Films made on the theme of friendship. We have many songs based on ‘dost’, ‘dostee’, ‘yaar’, ‘yaaree’ etc. etc.

Today’s song is dedicated to the friendship of Lord Krishn and his poor childhood friend Sudama. The song under discussion is penned by Kavi Pradeep. I have listened to it many times while preparing ths writeup. Every time Listening to this song has given me goose pimples every single time. It is a beautiful and touching song describing the visit of Sudama to the palace of his the childhood friend of Lord Krishn visits him in his palace. The two friends are meeting after a long time and as mentioned in the song this meeting is happening after the ‘Mahaabhaarat yuddh’.
