Some years back, I recall having seen for the first time on the internet the photo features of Hindi film stars such as Madhubala, Nalini Jaywant and Begum Para in ‘Life’ magazine. These photographs were taken by the magazine’s well known photographer, James Burke in 1951 who was posted in India. From the standard of 1951, these photographs would have ranked as bold. But one more actress also featured in that magazine – the featured photos were bolder than those of the stars I mentioned earlier. Subsequently, I had also seen her images appearing in ‘Filmindia’ magazines of 1948 and 1949. The actress in the photoshoot of 1951 was Mohana Cabral.

Today (18 february 2016) is the birth anniversary of Nimmi (DoB 18 february 1933). Sri Lanka Broadcasting Service honoured Nimmi by playing solo songs picturised on her in “Film sangeet” and duet songs picturised on her in the “Puraani Filmon Ke Geet” programme today.

Here is another comedy song from the film Nagina-1951, featuring Gope and Mohana at a party hosted by Heeralal.
Nagina was a film made by Dalsukh Pancholi. He was the man who had to run away from Lahore leaving all his empire of film production. Pancholi studio in Lahore was not just a film making place,it was an Institution for budding artistes in varioue faculties like acting, direction and music. Many actors and actresses started their careers here and then flourished in India later. Names that come to mind quickly are of Pran and Omprakash.

This is a comedy song from film NAGINA-51. The singers are Rafi and Shamshad. This was a Nutan- Nasir Khan film.
Sometime back I finished reading Nutan’s Biography, written by her close friend and noted journalist, Lalita Tamhane. The book is titled ‘ ASEN MEE…NASEN MEE ‘ (I may be…I may not be). Many interesting things which are not well known are mentioned in this book. I will try to describe a part of it, from Nutan’s early career, as I remember. The film Patanaga comes from the year 1949, which is considered as a watershed year in the annals of Hindi film music. So many wonderful movies with great music and great songs were released in this year, that it became a memorable year in terms of rising popularity of film music in India. The film is produced under the banner of Verma Films, Bombay and is directed by the distinguished Harnam Singh Rawail.
