Mukesh and his Composers – 42
What do these three films have in common?
• Footpath (1953)
• Shola aur Shabnam (1961)
• Shagoon (1964)
Well, it’s no brainteaser. Khayyam saab scored music for all the above quoted films.
But then a lesser-known trivia is the name of Vipin Mehra who was the assistant music director in all the three films.

This post is in memory of legendary singer Mukesh on his Remembrance Day (22 July 1923 to 27 August 1976).
The post is also in memory of arguably Mukesh’s greatest fan and compiler of Mukesh Geet Kosh, Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji(15 October 1949 to 27 August 2024), who passed away on the same day and month last year (on 27 August 2024).
At the outset, as I pen down my 100th post on this unique blog, I take the opportunity to express my heartfelt and sincere thanks to Atul ji for providing this platform on a platter for Hindi Film Music aficionados to not only contribute thoughts on films and songs but also flex flairs for writing.
Today’s song in memory of Mukesh and Harish ji is easily available but is unique in the sense that the details about the making of this song are not available in public domain.

ye ilm kaa sauda, ye risaale, ye kitaaben
ek shaks ki yaadon ko bhulaane ke liye hain
—– Jaan Nisaar Akhtar
The meaning of the sher is that these exchange of knowledge, these journals, these books are meant to forget memories of a person. But I write this article for remembering today, Jaan Nisaar Akhtar on his 49th Remembrance Day. He was essentially a poet but circumstances forced him to write songs for films when an arrest warrant was issued against him in Bhopal being the follower of leftist ideology. He went underground eventually landing in Mumbai in 1949 leaving behind his wife and two small children. So, to manage the family, he started writing songs for Hindi films.
Syed Jaan Nisaar Hussain Rizvi (18/02/1914 – 19/08/1976), popularly known as Jaan Nissar Akhtar was born in Gwalior. His father, Muztar Khairabadi, a well-known Urdu poet was the Magistrate in the State of Gwalior. After completion of the matriculation from Gwalior, Jaan Nissar Akhtar joined Aligarh Muslim University and completed M.A. in Urdu. He returned to Gwalior and got a job as a lecturer in Victoria College. In 1943, he got married to Safia, sister of Urdu poet, Mazaj Lucknawi. In 1947, he shifted to Bhopal where he joined Hamidia College as Head of Urdu and Persian Department. In Bhopal, he joined the Progressive Writers’ Movement.

Non-Film Songs of Mukesh – 04
————————————————
A hat-trick of short songs and shorter posts.
For Mukesh’s Remembrance Day on 27 August 24, due to paucity of time, I had sent this short song from Sangam (1964).
Then, I happened to stumble upon another rare rendition by Mukesh from the film Duniya Na Maane (1959).

Celebrating the Centenary of Mukesh
“o jaane waale ho sakey to laut ke aana. . .”
The film is ‘Bandini’ from 1963. Words from the pen of Shailendra and the music composition from the mind of SD Burman. The voice – is the voice that has embellished nearly a thousand songs, with an attractive rendition that makes the listeners fall in love with every song.
Yes, Mukesh.

Eid ul Azha mubarak ho, to all friends and readers.
It is generally believed that faith and logic are two different things. What is faith? Basic premise of faith would be the belief in God. The conviction that there is a Supreme Power who holds the strings of all things in the universe. After all the world is a stage and we all are actors. Shakespeare said it, but it is nothing but the truth. All of us are here for a set number of days, playing our designated roles, doing things we are destined to do, amassing good deeds and bad deeds. As we complete the life circle and leave this mortal world, the soul does go somewhere, where else it will go but to the creator? Logic has no option but to agree that the creator is in best position to answer the question, what is the purpose of creation? If there was no creator, nothing makes sense in the whole existence. Science can give answers till a certain point and that is that. Logic starts where science gives up. And sound logic points to God, the Creator, the Sustainer, the one who says “be” and it is.

Non Film Songs of Mukesh – 02
————————————-
These days, new-borns, barely a few hours old are made to wear full pants. It was not the case three and a half decades back at least in my case.
I got my full pant stitched only when I entered High School from primary grade. And, that too since it was mandatory for boys to start wearing full pants from VIII standard. Else, who knows, I would have had to wait for another 3 years for this luxury when I would step into college life. Jeans and readymade pants were an ultra-luxury which would have to wait for some more time.
What “aspect” of the body of a 12-year-old boy gets covered by wearing full pants is something which I have never been able to contemplate till today. Now at 46, I prepare wearing shorts even when going to the market. 🙂 How times change.

Today, May 27, 2020 is the 56th Remembrance Day of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. I also remember this day for two other reasons. First, it was the day when my SSC result was out in the morning and second, I had to attend my maternal uncle’s marriage. That day was almost like current lockdown situation except that the trains were running and we could go out. A pall of gloom was visible on almost every one’s faces I met at the marriage. The question in their mind was ‘After Nehru, Who?
