Today’s song is from the film Hunterwali ki Beti-1943. This is perhaps the only film in the world where the Heroine has done the role of a daughter, whose mother also was the same heroine in an earlier film. The Heroine fearless Nadia entered the world of Stunt films in India, with the hit film ” Hunterwali “-in 1935. After 8 years, she was doing the role of ‘Hunterwali ki beti’-1943, in this film ! Wadia Brothers’s (JBH Wadia and Homi Wadia) last silent film was ‘Toofan Mail’ (1932) which was released after sound films came into being.  As far as I know, the first sound film with a prestigious train name was also ‘Toofan Mail’ (1934) produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone. This was probably the first action-adventure-stunt film with a title of the film after a prestigious train which became a huge box office success.

Old film music lovers have always been curious about the less known artistes of music, like composers or arrangers and background music makers. Occasional or unkunown singers are also a matter of curiosity. Some of the old time composers used to give music under names other than their own known names. Some examples are Lata mangeshkar gave music to Marathi films as ‘Anandghan’, Snehal Bhatkar used names like B.Vasudev or V.G.Bhatkar in his initial phase, C.Ramchandra gave music as ‘Annasaheb’, while composing songs for Master Bhagwan’s stunt films, and GM Durrani used the name ‘Gunjan’ when composing music for films, etc.

“Pahaadi Kanya”(1936) was directed by Harshad Rai Mehta for Wadia Movietone, Bombay. This movie had Nadia, Boman Shroff, John Cawas, Sharifa, Gulshan, Sardar Mansoor, Master Mohammad, Jal Khambata, Abdul Rehman, Bismillah etc in it. This movie is described as a costume drama in HFGK though it appears to be an action movie, seeing the name of Nadia in it in the title role alongwith Boman Shroff and Johan Cawas.
