“Mera Naam Joker” (1970) was an ambitious movie of Raj Kapoor which unfortunately failed big time at the box office when it was released. The box office debacle was so big that it took Raj Kapoor quite some time to recover from it, and when he recovered, he had made a clean break from the past, in the sense that his musical team was totally revamped.

PARDESI (1957) was an Indo-Soviet co-production film in Hindi and Russian languages . The Hindiversion of the film was directed by K A Abbas and the star cast included Balraj Sahani, Nargis, Oleg Strizhenov, Prithviraj Kapoor, Jairaj, David, Padmini. The film did not create a stir at the box office but was nominated for Cannes Film Festival (1958.) M R Acharekar got the Filmfare award for the best art direction (1958) for this film.

January 16th is the birth anniversary of Omkar Prasad Nayyar (O P Nayyar), one of the most prolific music director of Hindi film industry of the golden era of 50s and 60s. Although O P Nayyar did not receive any formal training in classical music, his folk tune based compositions became a rage among all the sections of the public. That he was one of the top music directors of the golden era of 50s and 60s without Lata Mangeshkar singing a single song for him, speaks volumes about his talent and calibre as a music director. He won Filmfare award for the best music director for Naya Daur (1957).

When the movie is called “Afsaana”, one expects to see the famous movie starring Ashok Kumar. This movie is called Afsaana, and Ashok Kumar is in it, but it is not that famous movie of 1951, which was the original movie that had identical twin brothers as well as “separated in the mela” relatives. 🙂 This “Afsaana” in contrast is a movie of recent vintage and it hardly troubled the box office much. Apart from Ashok Kumar figuring in both movies, “Afsaana” (1951) and “Afsaana” (1966) have little in common.
