Today’s song is from a Costume film- Raj Mukut-1950.
The film was made by Mohan Pictures, Bombay. It was directed by Nanubhai Vakil and the music was given by Pt. Gobind Ram. The film cast consisted of Nimmi, Veena, Jairaj, Ram Singh, Sapru, Gulab, Ramesh Sinha, jankidas, Baby Tabassum and many others. The banner Mohan Pictures was owned by Ramnik Shah (husband of actress Indurani). Director Nanubhai Vakil was his Saadu (Co-Brother) who was husband of Indurani’s sister- Sarojini.

In a departure from the pattern in this series so far, today I am presenting an all male duet. As I was searching for a song starting with ‘व’, I came across this very interesting song from the 1950 film ‘Shaadi Ki Raat’. This one is a male-male duet in which Rafi Sb’s voice is accompanied by that of Raja Gul. And this made me think. I checked back on the songs posted so far in this series, only to find that I have only been posting male-female duets. Then, as I scanned the list of songs, I came across so many male-male duets. And I was asking myself – does that mean another series? I don’t know. Let’s wait and see.

चाँदनी रातें प्यार की बातें
खो गई जाने कहाँ
That is the very first introduction to this extremely versatile actress of the Hindi cinema. The song was played in the weekly Chitrahaar program one evening. And the kid me was soaking in the performance with an open mouth and extreme ignorance of the emotions being dealt with. The primeval image carried in was that of a serious actress given over to sad roles and sad songs. Little did I know that I couldn’t have more further from reality.
Remembering Geeta Bali, the actress extraordinaire, on the anniversary of her passing away (21st Jan).

Today’s song is from the film Ghar Ki Izzat (1948). It is a lively duet of Shamshad Begum and Ram Kamlani. The film is produced and directed by Ram Daryani, under the banner of Murli Cinetone, Bombay. Music was given by Pt Gobind Ram and songs and dialogues were by Ishwar Chandra Kapoor. The cast of the film was Mumtaz Shanti, Dilip Kumar, Gope, Gulab, Dixit, Manorama, Jeevan, Suleiman etc etc.
