Janaury 31st is the death anniversary of Suraiyya who was India’s greatest female singer-actor of the post-partition period. While reading her profile and biography, I felt that her life had twists and tales worthy of making a full length feature film. For instance, her romantic involvement with Dev Anand, a dominating maternal grandmother who, apart from deciding her filmy career, played a spoilsport in her romantic relationship and finally her decision to quit films to live a life of seclusion, can be some of the ingredients for a cinematic presentation. Suraiyya’s life cycle can best be described in some of her own renditions like Laayi khushi ki duniya (Vidya) , Tere nainon ne chori kiyaa mera chhota sa jiya pardesiya (Pyaar ki jeet) and Raste pe ham khade hain dil e beqaraar le kar (Rajput) to Ye kaisi ajab daastaan ho gayi hai(Rustam Sohrab)(1963) and finally to Rahiye ab aisi jagah chal kar jahan koi naa ho (Mirza Ghalib) .

Remembering Mahendra Kapoor today, 9th Jan, his birth anniversary.
As I am searching for songs to post for today, I came across this simply super gem of a melody which I have heard long time back, and which has since been eluding me. This song just has to be counted amongst the best and softest duets ever. Rendered softer than silk and softer than velvet, this duet is by Asha ji and Mahendra ji. I am sure as you would hear this, the reaction is going to be, “wow, not posted yet?”.

In case of most movies, only a few songs become popular and other songs become forgotten with time. I have found that several of these forgotten songs are superb songs to listen to, and with some luck, they should have become popular songs, instead of ending up into the dustbin of obscurity.

Between 1950s to 1970s, there was a series of British movies whose titles began with “Carry on..” . These movies were low budget comedy movies, whose comedy consisted of parody, farce, slapstick and double entendre, as wikipedia puts it. In India, I S Johar took a leaf out of this “Carry On” series movies, and he produced a few such movies whose titles began with “Johar in..”.
