Sonik Omi, who were assistants to Madan Mohan for a long time, tended to suffer a fate similar to Madan Mohan as independent music directors. They would create outstanding music, but the movies where their music would be included would fail at the box office without a whimper. As a result, the career of Sonic Omi failed to take off despite the brilliance of their music.

I have listened to this song many a times and it appears a typical Raj Kapoor movie song all the way. It is obviously sung by Mukesh. And I was convinced that Shailendra and Shankar Jaikishan have to be the lyricist and Music directors respectively. So I was mightily surprised to know that I was off target. The lyricist for this movie Chhaliya is Qamar Jalalabadi and the music director duo is Kalyanji Anandji for this movie. And I must say that they have done very good imitation of Shailendra and Shankar Jaikishan, who were they the top lyricist and music director in Bollywood.

For those who lived in India during 1960s and 1970s, and who listened to radio Ceylon every morning, 7-30 to 8 AM was the time for old songs. Most people (masses) including kids like me scoffed at these old songs and waited for 8 AM. Last song of that programme was by K L Sehgal, and we would know that the “aaphi ke geet” programme, where new songs were played was just round the corner. All over the country, listeners, including the farmaish senders from Jhumri Tilaiyya and elsewhere would start paying more attention.
There was one exception during this time slot between 7-30 to 8 AM though, and that would arrive on the first day of every new month. This was a song of Kishore Kumar that would go ” din hai suhana aj pahli tarikh hai”. Even those who could not stand old songs would approve of this song. It was the only song of that programme that no one ever found boring or grumbled against.

It is a movie that has long been forgotten , but this movie was lit up by this one awesome comedy song sung and performed on the screen by the one and only Kishore Kumar. It is a tremendous comedy song written by that lesser known lyricist Qamar Jalalabadi and composed so well by Kalyanji Anandji. Kishore Kumar has sung and acted with characteristic exuberance in this song.
It is my privilege to present this hidden gem that deserves to be ranked as one of the unforgettable comedy songs from Kishore Kumar. Kishore Kumar, the genius is at his best here while singing as well as acting. This song, though largely forgotten now was ranked 4th in 1971 Binaca geetmala finals. It was that popular in its days.
