In the history of Hindi film songs – and we are talking then about several thousand songs – there have been a few really, really, REALLY popular ones. There have been many very good ones but as we know, not all good songs end up being popular with the masses. One need look no further than many of Manna Dey’s songs which were of extremely high quality but whose popularity was largely limited to the classes, not the masses.

At the age of 5-6 years, you are too young to realise what is going on, and at the age of 15-16, you have learnt to think logically, and you are then required to become mature and responsible. Till 1974-75, when Rajesh Khanna’s movies began losing their appeal (for me at least), I was happy to watch any Rajesh movie for him alone. There was almost always at least one good song to enjoy in the movie. And very often more than one.

It is practically impossible to talk of actors or hit films of Bollywood of the early 70s and not speak of Rajesh Khanna in the same breath. He was synonymous with Bollywood hit movies at that time and though other heroes did manage a few hits between them, he was THE towering figure amongst them all at that time.

The first Rajesh Khanna movie I remember watching in my life is Kati Patang. By then his star was on the rise and this movie, blockbuster that it turned out to be, only further confirmed this state of affairs.
