Daanton taley dabaa kar honth

Posted on: September 1, 2010

This post is written by Raja, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor of posts to this blog

Till 1974-75, when Rajesh Khanna’s movies began losing their appeal (for me at least), I was happy to watch any Rajesh movie for him alone. There was almost always at least one good song to enjoy in the movie. And very often more than one.

I will admit that when I saw them at that time, at that age, I did not always understand all the storylines very well but I have seen almost all those movies again later in life and feel the same sense of warmth towards them now as I felt then. Only, this time with a better sense of understanding of the story.

One movie that stands out in all this as a movie that I do not remember with any particular fondness is “Doli” (1969).

Now, the first time I saw this movie I must not even have been ten. I could not understand the storyline much and I do not remember liking the movie either. The only thing I remembered of the movie was a Doli song. And another song with Prem Chopra in it (a rarity in those days).

Years later, actually just a few years ago when I was repeating my “old” Rajesh movies, I happened to see this movie again.

What can I say?

Rajesh, being Rajesh (and a very young one at that) was very handsome, no doubt.

And the songs were not bad either.

But that is where everything good about the movie stopped for me. The story was so regressive, full of stereotypes, demeaning to women that I began wishing I had not picked this one up for a repeat.

But, like I said, the songs were not bad. And since this is a song blog, I see no reason why a song should be punished for belonging to a movie that I would certainly not consider one of my preferred watches.

So, here is “Daanton taley dabaa kar honth”. It is a fun song (in the “teasing song” category) and definitely one of the better memories of the movie for me. The song, sung by Rafi saab, is catchy, the picturisation is pleasant, Rajesh looks oh-so-handsome and, somehow, I always like to see scooter scenes in movies. 😀

In an earlier post on this blog, Atul had commented that he had figured out the “teasing-song” formula. That somewhere midway in the last stanza, the heroine would change her stance. Her “inkaar” would become “ikraar”. This song is further proof of that hypothesis. 😀

I hope you enjoy this song.

Song-Daanton tale dabaa kar honth (Doli) (1969) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

Daanton taley dabaa kar honth
Aankhen kar ke badi badi
Khaa jaayegi mujh ko aise
Dekh rahi hai khadi khadi
Ek haseenaa, lagaa hai jisko
Unnis oopar ek maheenaa
Daanton taley dabaa kar honth
Aankhen kar ke badi badi
Khaa jaayegi mujh ko aise
Dekh rahi hai khadi khadi
Ek haseenaa, lagaa hai jisko
Unnis oopar ek maheenaa

Phoolon ka ras pea pea kar
Husn pe rangat aayi hai
Aankh mein kitney chaal qayaamat
Shokh tabeeyat paayi hai
Phoolon ka ras pea pea kar
Husn pe rangat aayi hai
Aankh mein kitney chaal qayaamat
Shokh tabeeyat paayi hai
Naagin jaisi balkhaati
Bijli jaisi lehraati
Ek haseenaa, lagaa hai jisko
Unnis oopar ek maheenaa
Daanton taley dabaa kar honth
Aankhen kar ke badi badi
Khaa jaayegi mujh ko aise
Dekh rahi hai khadi khadi
Ek haseenaa, lagaa hai jisko
Unnis oopar ek maheenaa

Hans hans ke thukraati jaa
Tadpengey tadpaati jaa
Lekin aye imaan ki dushman
Itna to samjhaati jaa
Hans hans ke thukraati jaa
Tadpengey tadpaati jaa
Lekin aye imaan ki dushman
Itna to samjhaati jaa
Pyar khada hai raahon mein
Kab aayegi baahon mein
Ek haseenaa, laga hai jisko
Unnis oopar ek maheenaa
Daanton taley dabaa kar honth
Aankhen kar ke badi badi
Khaa jaayegi mujh ko aise
Dekh rahi hai khadi khadi
Ek haseenaa, lagaa hai jisko
Unnis oopar ek maheenaa
Unnis oopar ek maheenaa
Unnis oopar ek maheenaa

Is that Lambretta scooter Rajesh Khanna driving?

Like

Yep, it is. Check out the fuel knob and the choke knob at the 1:55 mark, and the typical swing arm suspension for the front wheel. Also, the combination of horn_switch – light_controls on the right handlebar.

Cute, cute song! Awful film–one of Kaka’s worst in terms of messages. And can’t stand Babita 🙂

@Sid, sorry, I cannot make out which scooter brand it is. Maybe somebody else can identify it.

@Suhan, indeed it is high on the “avoid yaar” category of films. I don’t mind Babita as such though I would certainly not call myself a big fan. But this song is all about Rajesh and Rafi saab’s voice (catchy tune by Ravi). I have an opinion on “Rafi for Rajesh” but I will write about it in another post.

In this video clip, the short conversation preceding the song is “just so cute”. Rajesh at his romantic best! 🙂

A very good song of Super Star Rajesh Khanna from Doli.

Super Star Rajesh Khanna – The Cary Grant of Indian Cinema :

Rajesh Khanna irrevocably impacted Indian cinema and culture like no actor before him. His acting perfection and application of talent were drawn solely from his inward vision. Khanna did not cultivate the phenomenal attributes that created his “superstardom” by reason or will, but through the connectedness to his own persona that the masses then idealized. For he is one who is impervious as to who is ahead and who is behind. Khanna’s inward vision, a special gift from the divine leads him always. Today he is the indomitable and highly respected veteran of one hindred and fifty films. For me, he is like the Cary Grant of India. Both actors are Capricorns that have played the widest variety of roles without ever bankrupting the fascination of the audience. Khanna is the platinum standard for landmark performances and sheer screen presence. Ever since the camera discovered his photogenia it has been having a love affair with it. His Byronic inspirations of romance as autographed elegantly on screen endure. Rajesh Khanna is a lovemark because he kindles our affections at the highest denominators and that is a life nobly lived means.

Rajesh Khanna – The Greatest Living Legend and the real & only Super Star of Indian Cinema till date.

There are romantic leading men and there are romantic leading men, but very few have taken cinematic love to legendary heights. While there might be other icons but Super-Star- Actor Rajesh Khanna after four decades, he is the ultimate true romantic legend.
