When Imperial Movietone released India’s first sound film, ‘Alam Ara’ in 1931, other top film production companies of Hindi films followed suit. Madan Theatre with ‘Shirin Farhad’ (1931), Ranjit Movietone with ‘Dev Devyani’ (1931), Sagar Films with ‘Meri Jaan’ (1931), Prabhat Film Company with ‘Ayodhya Ka Raja’ (1932, in Marathi and Hindi), New Theatre with ‘Mohabbat Ke Aansoo” (1932) were some of the early film production companies to release their first Hindi sound films.

Today’s song is from the film Jadu Nagari-1940.
In last 2-3 years, I find that a lot many collectors are uploading songs from films of the 30s and also rare songs. The HFM History students- like me- are highly indebted to them for their generosity.

Today is an important day, maybe one of the most important day in the annals of Hindi film music. Today, 18th January, is the day the legendary Saigal Sb completed his mortal journey and departed from this world. After so much that has been written about him, any more contributions would simply be repetitions. But then, no matter how much we may write about him and his singing, it will never ever be able to express the complete emotions about him, and his voice. For one cannot fathom in words and language, that which is a gift of divine.

“Krorepati”(1936) was directed by Hem Chandar for New Theatres, Calcutta. The movie had Molina, K L saigal, Trilok Kapoor, Pahadi Sanyal, Nawab, Jagdish, babulal, Rajkumari Calcuttewaali, Kedar, Devbala, Amar Mallick, Nemo, Sardar Akhtar, Durga Bannerji, Rajlaxmi, Asghar Shor, Boken Chatto, Keshto Das, Prafull Rao etc in it.
