Today’s song is the last and final song from the film Ratnavali-1945.

The film was made by Amar Pictures, Bombay, owned by Chimanlal Desai, who was the owner of Sagar Movietone earlier. The films made by this company were generally directed by Virendra Desai, his son. The life story of Virendra Desai was very bad. While he was at the peak of his career, with a wife and 2 children, he fell in love with his Heroine – Nalini Jaywant, who was 15 years younger to him. After completing the film Adab Arz-1943, both of them eloped to Calcutta and got married there.

Today’s song is from the film Ratnavali-1945. It was neither a Flop nor a Hit film. Despite the prediction of the film magazine Film India about its total failure, it did recover its cost and made a good profit also. Although it was labelled as a ‘Social Film’, by the HFGK, it was actually a Costume film, based on a King, Queens and Vazier type story.

The film was made by Amar Pictures, Bombay. It was directed by Virendra Desai, son of the owner-Chimanlal Desai and the music was by Pt. Govind Ram- one of the most respected senior Music Directors of those times. Many younger composers treated him as their Idol. C.Ramchandra was one of such composers. The cast of the film included Surendra, Ratnamala, Maya Banerjee, Usha mantri, Leela Mishra, K.N.Singh, Ansari and others.

Saga Of Sleepless Nights – 7
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

kal raat sapne mein aaye thhey tum
mere mehboob mere mehboob

Sound of a temple bell – that is how the renowned music director OP Nayyar once described the voice of Shamshad Begum. The clear sound of the tinkle, the chime and the ringing – the quality of sound that can maybe best described with the word ‘खनकती हुई’ – I could not locate a commensurate word in English. I am sure friends and readers who have heard her songs will easily relate with what I am getting at.

Remembering Shamshad Begum today on the 101st anniversary of her birth. She was born in 1919, this day, just one day after Baisakhi, and the horrific massacre at Jalianwaala Bagh in the nearby city of Amritsar. She was born into a traditional and conservative family of limited means. One of the eight children in the family, her father was a mechanic with limited income and a large family to feed.
