Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Kal raat sapne mein aaye thhey tum

Posted on: September 19, 2010

In this blog, I post songs from the golden era of Hindi movies which is roughly from late 1940s to early 1980s, though several great songs are to be found beyond this time frame too.

While posting songs from this era, I have realised that there have been a large number of artists who have been involved in creation of these songs. Common sense may suggest that there may have been only about one dozen or so singers, 30-40 lyricists and a similar number of music directors. But when I look at the list of singers, lyricists and music directors whose songs I have posted in this blog, I am quite surprised.

I find that I have posted songs from as many as 208 singers ! These songs have been written by 172 lyricists and I have posted songs from as many as 142 music directors.

I have only been posting the very best songs from Golden era of Hindi movie music and such a large figure for singers, lyricists and music directors from that era suggests that there have been a large number of artists who have contributed in making the golden era what it was. We all know the well known names among these artists, but the lesser known names were by no means any less capable. On the contrary, many of the less known and less famous artists were just as good, and in a few cases, even better than the better aknown artists. It is lack of exposure and lack of success on their limited opportunities that deprived us from listening more about such talents.

When it comes to talents lost to us because of lack of opportunities, the name of Ganesh invariably comes up to my mind. Younger brother of Pyarelal (of Laxmikant Pyarelal), Ganesh did every thing on his limited opportunities to show us that he was a fantastic music director, but luck refused to smile on her. And today, even his 87 songs from 16 movies are not as well known as they should. And even when people listen to these songs and like them, they appreciate the singer and fail to find a word of praise for Ganesh, who created some iconic songs during his limited opportunities. Almost all his songs are worthy to be called as evergreen songs, that is how good they are.

Ganesh mostly got to work with C grade manners and he created A grade music in them. Most of these movies failed at the box office and as a result, Ganesh failed to get much recognition for the outstanding music that he created in his movies.

There was one A grade movie where Ganesh got to work. It was Manmohan Desai’s “Sharaarat” (1972) and Ganesh created sensational music in this Vishwajeet-Mumtaz starrer. Alas, his awesome music too could not help him get more opportunities than he so richly deserved.

In this blog, I have posted 31 songs composed by Ganesh. Here is the 32nd song. This song is from “Sharaarat” (1972). In a movie that was full of superb songs, viz Dil ki lagi aisi re aahen bharoon tere pyaar mein and Dil ne pyaar kiyaa hai ik bewafaa se , this song was somewhat overshadowed. This song is an outstanding song on its own, though.

Here is this wonderful song “kal raat sapne mein aaye thhey tum” from “Sharaarat” (1972). It is a duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. It is picturised on Mumtaz and Vishwajeet. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist of this song.

kal raat sapne mein aaye thhey tum
mere mehboob mere mehboob
kal raat sapne mein aaye thhey tum
mere mehboob mere mehboob

ye baat kabse chhupaaye thhey tum
mere mehboob mere mehboob

sanam wo fasaanaa muhabaat bhara
kyaa kyaa huaa thaa bataana zaraa
sanam wo fasaanaa muhabaat bhara
kyaa kyaa huaa thaa bataana zaraa
raat bhar deep se deep jaltaa rahaa
hamse nazren milaake
phir kaho kyaa kahaa
mere mehboob mere mehboob
kal raat sapne mein aaye thhey tum
mere mehboob mere mehboob

aaaa aaaa
aaaa aaaa aaaa
ho
phir kaho na
jo kah na paaye
ho
maine ye dekhaa hai
ke tum leke baaraat aaye
ye niraali adaa hai mulaaqaat ki
laaj aaye jo sochoon baat kal raat ki
mere mehboob mere mehboob
kal raat sapne mein aaye thtey tum
mere mehboob mere mehboob

milan do dilon ka bahaaron pe hai
meri jaan tumhaare ishaaron pe hai
milan do dilon ka bahaaron pe hai
meri jaan tumhaare ishaaron pe hai
tum mera roop ho
mera singaar ho
tum meri zindagi ho
tum mera pyaar ho
mere mehboob mere mehboob
kal raat sapne mein aaye thhey tum
ye baat kabse chhupaaye thhey tum
mere mehboob mere mehboob
mere mehboob mere mehboob
