“Ummeed” (1971) is an obscure movie, despite this movie being of relatively recent vintage by the standards of this blog. This movie was a Rajan Films production and it was directed by Nitin Bose. The cast of this movie included names like Ashok Kumar, Nanda,Leela Naidu, Joy Mukherjee, Tuntun, Agha, Leela Misra etc. This movie must have sunk without a trace, because I have not heard of this movie despite this movie getting released when I was at my most alert and curious as a pre teen kid.

Something providential in the coincident that today is the birth anniversary of two wonderful dancers and performers of the Hindi silver screen. Yes, today, 21st October is the day that both Shammi Kapoor and Helen share as their date of birth. And not that it is a strange or unique occurrence. Many people share their dates of birth with many other known, even renowned people. In the decades of 60s and 70s, and maybe even 80s, when radio was the prime mover of entertainment, one could bank upon hearing it somehow, someplace, every place through the day. In the morning radios would be the wake up call at homes, with news, religious music, and film music playing till one left for school or work. Afternoons and evenings again, radio used to play news and music and one could hear the sounds emanating from many households. And yes, radio would play all day at small tea shops, paan shops, and general merchants, and if there was a cricket commentary being broadcast, it was not out of place to see large crowds at tea shops and paan shops.
