Earlier today, in another post I had mulled over the decline of films with mythological themes. Extending that concern further, I would also include the theme of Muslim religious and social films, which seem to be on the decline. Once again, in the 90s and later, I cannot really recall any significant film based on Islamic social and religious values.

“Kavi Kalidas” (1959) was a Sindhu Films Production. It was a brainchild of S N Tripathi who had produced and directed it and of course composed the music for this movie. The movie had Bharat Bhushan ,Nirupa Roy, Anita Guha,Sapru, Sabita Chatterjee, Niranjan Sharma, Babu Raje etc in it.

Greetings to all on the arrival of the Navratri festival, a nine days celebration of Maa Durga, the Mother Goddess. And even more – hearty greetings for a Happy New Year, Nav Samvatsar 2069, the beginning of the new year as per the Vikrami calendar, established by King Vikramaditya of Ujjain. The calendar starts with the first day after the new moon in the month Chaitra, and generally falls in March-April time frame.

Many of the songs that we discuss in this blog are those that we have heard in the past and we want to relive them and enjoy them again. JAADOO NAGARI (1961) as the name suggests, was a fantasy film with Ranjan and Vijaya Choudhary as lead actors. Other cast included Tiwari, Helen and Majnu. The film was produced under the banner of Mukul pictures and directed by Radhakant who had directed some of Dara Singh films such as Rustam-e-Rome (1964), Boxer (1965), Insaaf (1966) and Toofaan (1969).

In Hindi movies, most artists tend to get typed cast and most people can only visualise one standard kind of performance from them. When it comes to Hindi movie music, for instance, what kind of music does one expect when Bharat Vyas is the lyricist and S N Triptahi is the music director ? We expect songs that are either bhajans or semi classical songs.
