Most of of the present generation of music lovers may not remember Shiv Dayal Batish ( S D Batish), the classical musician, vocalist, playback singer and music director. During his filmy career in 40s and 50s, he composed music for 19 films (including 2 films with his pseudo name of Nirmal Kumar) and sang about 100 songs. His music compositions for Hindi films are generally labelled as Lahore style of Hindi film music which was used by Lahore based music directors like Pandit Amarnath, Pandit Govindram, Master Ghulam Haider, Shyam Sundar, Khurshid Anwar etc. S D Batish was the cousin of other Batish brothers – Pandit Amarnath, Husnlal and Bhagatram. The Voice Of Mukesh #8
—————————-
It is well known that the film that really launched the career of Mukesh was the 1945 film ‘Pehli Nazar’. And in this film, the most enduring sound has been the song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De”, sung by Mukesh. Apart from this timeless and iconic song, Mukesh has sung three more song in this film. The duet is the title song “Laga Pehli Nazar Ka Teer”. These three songs are now already present on this blog.

First, it established Mukesh as a singing icon, to be reckoned with. And secondly, it put in shade the remaining songs of this film, which are now remembered only by the real die hard aficionados of Mukesh’s voice. The pathos and the depth of emotion that is subsumed in “Dil Jalta Hai. . .”, is without doubt matchless. But then, the other songs in this film are no less a delight, in their own rights.

Very recently, I came across one more of her song ‘tumre darshan ka nainaa taras gaye ho’ from the film PRARTHANAA (1943). I heard this song for the first time and instantly liked it. The song is rendered in dadra style (crisp version of thumri ) based on raag Gaur-Malhar but with typical filmy musical orchestration of early 40s.
