Even as I type out this write-up, my fingers are trembling. And I am not exaggerating! I have written over 50 write-ups for this blog so far and yet I find myself struggling to put down my thoughts coherently for this particular piece. It is not as if I have writer’s block (which I may also well have) ; it is just that the occasion seems to have got the better of me. I find myself totally inadequate to the occasion, and although I’ve just started, I have this nasty foreboding that I am going to make a mess of this, I am going to end up “choking”. I am suddenly beginning to empathise and sympathise with the South African cricket team. 😀

Chhoti Chhoti Baatein (1965) is the last movie of the great actor Motilal. Motilal had been active in the Hindi film world for more than 3 decades by then. This was his first (and also the last) venture as a director and producer. Unfortunately, Motilal passed away before the release date of the movie, and in more than one ways, this movie turns out to be his swansong.

I have seen the movie Sautela Bhai (1962) many years ago on Doordarshan, and have remembered it for a very strong performance by Guru Dutt. It is a family drama, based on the story of two step brothers. Guru Dutt, the elder, is a responsible and values oriented person. The younger one is an irresponsible weakling, who has a bevy of crooked friends around him. The storyline moves on a very predictable track, with a happy ending.

The 1962 movie Rangoli has a bevy of most wonderful songs, some of which are already discussed in this blog. Here is a very soft and romantic duet from the same movie, beautifully sung by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. Lyrics are by Shailendra, and the composition is by Shanker Jaikishan.

I have discussed as many as five songs from “Rajkumar” (1964) so I naturally got complacent (like a good Indian cricket fan 🙂 )and thought that I had discussed all the songs from this movie.

Meena Kumari is typed cast as a tragedy queen in the minds of many movie watchers, but that is not entirely correct. For the first decade of her career, she played happy roles and it was only in the second decade of her career (viz 1960s) that she began to work in the tragedy roles.

Though I have heard this song from “Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai” (1960) several times, I never gave it any serious thought. But now, when I tried to find more details about the song, I found that this song has to be a very special song indeed.

As far as I know, Sasural (1961) was a pretty big hit. Produced by Prasad Productions and directed by LV Prasad, it starred Rajendra Kumar and B Saroja Devi.
