Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ham bhi hain tum bhi ho

Posted on: March 9, 2011

Though I have heard this song from “Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai” (1960) several times, I never gave it any serious thought. But now, when I tried to find more details about the song, I found that this song has to be a very special song indeed.

I found that this song is a very long song indeed. And this song is sung by not one or two or three or even four, but FIVE major singers, in addition to the chorus. There may not be too many songs in Hindi movies where five major singers have lent their voices.

Here is this song, which is sung by Manna Dey, Mukesh, Geeta Dutt, Mahendra Kapoor and Lata. This song is picturised on lots and lots of people playing bandits who sing and dance. As far as I can identify, Manna Dey sings for Pran, Mukesh for Raj Kapoor, Geeta Dutt for Padmini and Lata for Chanchal. I am unable to identify the actor who lip syncs in Mahendra Kapoor’s voice. I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify him.

This extremely long song is written by Shailendra. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan. This is the seventh song from this movie to be discussed in this blog !

Song-Ham bhi hain tum bhi ho(Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai) (1960) Singers- Manna Dey, Mukesh, Geeta Dutt, Mahendra Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

aa haa haa
aa naa

waah waah
shabaash

hai aag hamaare seene mein
ham aag se khelte aate hain
hoy-hoy
takraate hain jo is taaqat se
wo mitti mein mil jaate hain
hoy-hoy
tumse to patangaa achchhaa hai
jo hanste huye jal jaataa hai
oy hoy hoy hoy hoy
wo pyaar mein mit to jaataa hai
par naam amar kar jaataa hai
par naam amar kar jaataa hai
ham bhi hain tum bhi ho
donon hain aamne-saamne
dekh lo kyaa asar
kar diyaa pyaar ke naam ne

ham gaate-garajte saagar hain
koyi hamko baandh nahin paayaa
hoy-hoy
hoy ham mauj mein jab bhi lahraayen
saaraa jag dar se tharraayaa
hoy-hoy
ham chhoti si wo boond sahi
hai seep ne jisko apnaayaa
oy hoy hoy hoy hoy
khaaraa paani koyi pi na sakaa
ik pyaar kaa moti kaam aayaa
ik pyaar kaa moti kaam aayaa
ham bhi hain tum bhi ho
donon hain aamne saamne
dekh lo kyaa asar
kar diyaa pyaar ke naam ne

kis phool pe marti hai duniyaa
hai kaun saa phal sabse meethaa
oy hoy-hoy
nainon se jo nainaa takraaye
to kaun haaraa aur kaun jeetaa
oy hoy hoy
ye dil kaa kamal sabse sundar
mehnat kaa phal sabse meethaa
oy hoy-hoy
is pyaar ki baazi mein hans kar
jo dil haaraa wo sab jeetaa
jo dil haaraa wo sab jeetaa
ham bhi hain tum bhi ho
donon hain aamne saamne
dekh lo kyaa asar
kar diyaa pyaar ke naam ne

itnaa saa jiigar itnaa saa hai dil
kyaa baat badi karne aaye
hoy-hoy
kyaa paidaa hogi aag
agar patthar se na patthar takraaye
hoy-hoy
nanhaa saa ye dil aankhon mein na ho to
pal mein andheraa ho jaaye
hoy-hoy
itnaa saa ye dil tu de-de agar
saaraa jag teraa ho jaaye
saaraa jag teraa ho jaaye
ham bhi hain tum bhi ho
donon hain aamne saamne
dekh lo kyaa asar
kar diyaa pyaar ke naam ne
ham bhi hain tum bhi ho
donon hain aamne saamne

jaane kaisi ye maujen anjaanin
dil mein aayi jaise yaad puraani
jaane kaisi ye maujen anjaanin
dil mein aayi jaise yaad puraani
ho yaad puraani
le liyaa dil meraa
aaj ki rang bhari shaam ne
ham bhi hain tum bhi ho
donon hain aamne saamne

tumne mujhko samjhaa thaa begaanaa
lekin tumko maine hi pehchaanaa
tumne mujhko samjhaa thaa begaanaa
lekin tumko maine hi pehchaanaa
haay pehchaanaa
mil gayin manzilen
raah si khul gayi saamne
ham bhi hain tum bhi ho
donon hain aamne saamne

tu jo keh de main teri ho jaaun
khoyi-khoyi aankhon mein kho jaaun
tu jo keh de main teri ho jaaun
khoyi-khoyi aankhon mein kho jaaun
haay kho jaaun
tumne ye kyaa kiyaa
log dil ko lage thaamne
dekh lo kyaa asar
kar diyaa pyaar ke naam ne
ham bhi hain tum bhi ho
donon hain aamne saamne

Very nice n enjoyable song. Heard only on radio as i have not seen this movie. But it must be said that the music of RK films was always the best. Shankar Jaikishan’s musical genuis is best showcased in R.K. ‘s Shree 420, Aah, Awara, Chori Chori, Sangam, MNJ etc.

One correction : It is lata for Padmini.

corrections Atul
it is Geetha Dutt 4 Chanchal Lata 4 Padmini.
and Mahendra Kapoor is d voice for all d co bandits.
and in dis song it is “Kabila” think dats d word 4 “tribe” of Bandits. der r no captives.

At least I have identified Chanchal correctly. 🙂 What more do you expect from me ?

yes agreed. full marks to you 4 identifying Chanchal

mahendra kapur sings for the up and coming bandit leader played by pran

Unlike some songs in films which are interruptions of the storyline, this song, which happens early in the movie serves to establish the characters of various principals in the movie; namely Raju, Kammo, Raaka, Chanchal, and the collective group of dacoits. Very enjoyable song indeed.

RIP Pran.

I watched an interview of his once. He said that Raj Kapoor asked him (just before this film was shot) what mannerism he would adopt for his character, and he (Pran) decided that the villain would keep rubbing his neck every now and then – almost as a premonition as he was sure to be caught and punished some day, being a dacoit.

One of the greatest actors ever.
