“The Great Gambler”(1979) was directed by Shakti Samanta for C V K Shastri Productions, Bombay. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan (double role), Zeenat Aman, Neetu Singh, Prem Chopra, Utpal Dutt, Ifthikhar, Madan Puri, Om Shivpuri, Sujit Kumar, Helen, Roopesh Kumar, Jagdish Raj, Keshav Rana, Madhu, Prem Sagar, Ranjeet Sood, Rajan Kapoor etc in it.

Since this blog has much to do with nostalgia, I too sometimes (often) go back into the past of the blog and go through old posts of the blog. On quite a few occasions, I am myself surprised to find the contents of articlea that I had myself written. These days I no longer find time to delve deep into each individual songs and offer comments on the songs. Thoroughly exploring each and every song was a luxury that I could afford four years ago when the blog was truly one song a day blog. 🙂

In 1970s, when Amitabh Bachchan ruled the roost, I found it perplexing that Amitabh Bachchan movies with silly plots did good business whereas movies which were truly good in my judgement failed at the box office. To my mind, movies like “The Great Gambler”, and “Deshpremi” weere better movies than say “Muqaddar ka Sikandar” and “Suhaag”, but that is not what the public thought at that time.

“The Great Gambler” was an Amitabh Bachchan movie that was pronounced a damp squib when it was released in 1979. That came as a surprise to me because I found it a more watchable movie than many of the supposedly successful Amitabh Bachchan movies like “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar”, “Suhaag” etc.
