Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Chal ri sajni ab kya soche

Posted on: November 24, 2008

I have posted two songs from “Bambai ka Babu” in this blog, and readers will agree that both of them were great songs. But as far as Binaca geetmala of 1960 was concerned, the most popular song from this movie was yet another song viz ” Chal ri sajni ab kya soche”.

This song was a very moving song in the context of the movie, where the heroine, Suchitra Sen is shown leaving her home after getting married. This was the first great “bidaai” song in Bollywood movie history. The fact that Dev Anand, the one with whom the heroine flirts throughout the movie, is not the one she has been married, makes the situation even more poignant for them as well as for the audience.

This song, like the other two songs from this movie (posted earlier) have entered into the hall of fame of immortal bollywood songs. S D Burman’s music in this movie was just out of this world. Majrooh Sultanpuri touched the hearts of the listeners with just about every song that he wrote for this movie.

And what does one say about the singer ? All other songs in the male voice in this movie were sung by Rafi. Mukesh gets just this one song, and that songs becomes the most popular song of the movie. Mukesh certainly had that Midas touch. 1960 was a year of amazing songs and this song earned the 5th position in 1960 Binaca geetmala final. The fact that the other songs from this movie, despite their popularity failed to figure in that final shows how stiff was the competion among songs in that yeras’s Binaca geetmala final.

Song- Chal ri sajni ab kya soche ( Bambai ka Babu) (1960) Singer- Mukesh, Lyrics- Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD- S D Burman

Lyrics

chal ri sajni ab kyaa soche
chal ri sajni ab kyaa soche
kajraa naa bah jaaye rote rote
chal ri sajni ab kyaa soche

baabul pachhtaaye haathon ko mal ke
kaahe diyaa pardes tukde ko dil ke
baabul pachhtaaye haathon ko mal ke
kaahe diyaa pardes tukde ko dil ke
aansoo liye, soch rahaa, door khadaa re
chal ri sajni ab kyaa soche
kajraa naa bah jaaye rote rote
chal ri sajni ab kyaa soche

mamtaa ka aanchal, gudiyon kaa kangnaa
chhoti badi sakhiyaan, ghar galli angnaa
mamtaa ka aanchal, gudiyon kaa kangnaa
chhoti badii sakhiyaan, ghar galli angnaa
chhoot gayaa, chhoot gayaa, chhoot gayaa re
chal ri sajni ab kyaa soche
kajraa naa bah jaaye rote rote
chal ri sajni ab kyaa soche

dulhan banke gori khadi hai
koyi nahin apnaa kaisi ghadi hai
dulhan banke gori khadi hai
koyi nahin apnaa kaisi ghadi hai
koyi yahaan, koyi wahaan, koyi kahaan re

Super song from Mukesh.

I don’t know whether you have seen this movie, Atul.
If not, you should see it.
Quite a “different” type of story.

I have located the VCD of this movie with great difficulty. So now I am in a position to watch this movie.

It is not quite correct to say that the heroine (Suchitra Sen) flirts with Dev Anand in the movie; it is the opposite.

Dev Anand, not knowing that she is his sister (which turns out to b ethe case in the end) flirts with her, and initially she takes it to be just the way this long lost brother of hers shows (brotherly) affection. Later she figures out that he is a plant in her family. After a few twists in the story, Dev comes to know that he is indeed her brother, and rescues her marriage which was going to be in shambles. And this is the song as she is leaving for sasuraal, and that is the end of the movie.
