Dil jo na kah saka

on:I have posted many songs of Rafi in this blog, and in each song I have raved about his voice. In fact one cannot help but remark on his voice quality whatever the song. In every song, he appered to give his very best.
Is it possible to better the very best. Well, it appears so to me in this case. Just listen to this song “dil jo na kah saka” from “Bheegi raat”. What remarkable singing !
Also, what superb lyrics by Majrooh. And amazing music of Roshan. This song is quite something. If you are in the right mood, then you cannot have enough of this song.
This song is picturised on Pradeep Kumar in the movie.
The same song is also sung separately by Lata for Meena Kumari. The picturisation of this female version is done very sensuously. And I include the female version of this song too here, mainly for its picturisation quality.
This is one song where both male and female version are awesome, just awesome. Let us not compare the two and try to pull down one to prove the superiority of the other.
This song finished fifth in Binaca geetmala 1966 final.
Here are both versions of the song:
Rafi version
Lata version
Song- Dil jo na kah saka (Bheegi Raat) ( 1965) Singer-Rafi/Lata, Lyrics- Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD- Roshan
Lyrics

(Rafi version)

dil jo naa kah sakaa
wohi raaz-e-dil kahne ki raat aayi
dil jo naa kah sakaa
wohi raaz-e-dil kahne ki raat aayi
dil jo naa kah sakaa
naghma sa koyi jaag utha badan me
jhankar ki si tharthari hai tan me
jhankar ki si tharthari hai tan me
ho mubarak tumhe kisi ki larajti si baahon mein
rahne ki raat aayi
dil jo na kah saka
taubaa ye kis ne anjuman sajaa ke
tukde kiye hain guncha-e-wafaa ke
tukde kiye hain guncha-e-wafaa ke
ho uchhaalo gulon ke tukde
ke rangeen fizaaon mein rahne ki raat aayi
dil jo naa kah sakaa
chaliye mubaarak jashn dosti kaa
daaman to thaamaa aap ne kisi kaa
daaman to thaamaa aap ne kisi kaa
ho hamen to khushi yahi hai
tumhen bhi kisi ko apnaa kahne ki raat aayi
dil jo naa kah sakaa
saagar uthaao dil kaa kis ko gham hai
aaj dil ki qeemat jaam se bhi kam hai
aaj dil ki qeemat jaam se bhi kam hai
ho piyo chaahe khoon-e-dil ho
ke peete pilaate hi rahne ki raat aayi
dil jo naa kah sakaa
wohi raaje dil kahne ki raat aayi
dil jo na kah saka

(Lata version)

hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
dil jo naa kah sakaa
wohi raaz-e-dil kahne ki raat aayi
dil jo naa kah sakaa
wohi raaz-e-dil kahne ki raat aayi
dil jo naa kah sakaa
naghma sa koyi jaag uthaa badan me
jhankar ki si tharthari hai tan me
jhankar ki si tharthari hai tan me
ho pyaar ki inhi dhadakti
dhadakti fizaaon me
rahne ki raat aayi
dil jo na kah saka
wohi raaz-e-dil kahne ki raat aayi
ab tak dabee thi ek mauj-e-armaan
lab tak jo aayi ban gayee hai toofaan
lab tak jo aayi ban gayee hai toofaan
ho baat pyaar ki bahakti
bahakti nigaahon se kahne ki raat aayi
dil jo na kah saka
wohi raaz-e-dil kahne ki raat aayi
guzren na ye shab khol doon ye julfen
tumko chupaaloon moond ke ye palkein
tumko chupaaloon moond ke ye palkein
ho bekaraar si larajti
larajti si chaaon mein
rahne ki raat aayi
dil jo na kah saka
wohi raaz-e-dil kahne ki raat aayi
dil jo na kah saka

Saw the video of this song for the first time just now. The picturization is certainly very suitable to the passion in the song. I think of such rafi songs as passionate songs.
BTW how did u complete line
‘ke peete pilaate hi rahne ki raat aayi’
whenever i have heard it its
‘ke peete pilaate hi ………………….’
Also the lata version video is not working.
This is one of the few Roshan songs which is still played on FM channels. Also the passion in the song is equalled only in that ‘Ghazal’ climax song ” Rang aur noor ki baraat kise” . I have given two more version of that song in the comments. Can u include them ?
Regards.

nahm ji: As “rahne ki raat aayi” are the concluding words of each stanza of this song, so perhaps the same has been assumed here too. But as you have rightly noted these words are not actually uttered here, instead the music takes over after “ke peete pilaate hi…”.

May I take the liberty to suggest a few corrections here and there in the lyrics for Lata’s version as given in the blog here:
1. 2nd para, 2nd and 3rd lines: “jhankar ki si” should be “jhankarti si”.
2. Last para, 1st line: “guzren” should be “guzre”.
3. Last para, 1st line: “julfen” should be “zulfen”.
4. Last para, 4th and 5th lines: “larajti” should be “larazti”

Wah wah…dil khush kar diya !!!
Not just one song born here, but twins.
Both top-class !!!
Pradip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar love triangle story…and music by Roshan !!!
First Aarti (1962)…then Bheegi Raat (1965)…then Sadiq’s Muslim social Bahu Begum (1967)…all with good storylines…all with fantastic songs.
Aise gaane kahan bante hain aaj kal !!!

This triangle was in Chitralekha (1964) (man re tu kahe na…..) too, not as a typical love triangle, but still love triangle. Hope u have seen the movie. I had, during my teenager days on Doordarshan.
