Yahi hai tamanna

Posted on: December 2, 2008

The two leading Bollywood men, who looked like they could sweet ladies off their feet with effortless ease were Shammi Kapoor and Dharmendra. And here Dharmendra works his charms on Supriya Chowdhury.

No idea how mortals would go about it, but Dharmenda sings a song “yahi hai tamanna tere dar ke saamne” accompanied by some kind of movement to and fro, which, I am told, is Dharmendra dancing. Well, I could never have imagined.

And it appears that ladies being swept off their feet do not hold Dharmendra’s lack of footwork against him. His disarming smile, and his great looks are all they need and they are ready to be bowled over. Only if things were that easy for most other men as well.

And the Rafi song is so foot tappingly melodious that one feels like dancing, and one gets a feeling that one can do a better job that Dharam Paaji with a little practice. There is no guarantee though that one will bag a lady at the end of the song.

Song- Yahi hai tamanna (Aapki parchchaaiyan ) (1962) Singer- Rafi, Lyrics- Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD- Madan Mohan

yahi hai tamannaa tere dar ke saamne
meri jaan jaaye meri jaan jaaye
haay yahi hai tamannaa tere dar ke saamne
meri jaan jaaye meri jaan jaaye
haay …

tere dar pe aayaa to bas aa gayaa main
na peechhe hatoongaa zamaane ke dar se
abhi aa raha hoon abhi kaise jaaun
mila kya hai mujhko abhi tere dar se
zaraa dekh loon main ye rukh ki bahaaren
ye qad pyaaraa-pyaaraa ye zulfon ke saaye
haay yahi hai tamannaa tere dar ke saamne
meri jaan jaaye meri jaan jaaye

gilaa hai yahi mujhko tere Khudaa se
haseen jisne itnaa banaayaa hai tujhko
na aataa kabhi teri galiyon mein zaalim
tere husn ne khud bulaayaa hai mujhko
jalaakar koyi shammaa kaise kahegaa
ke dekho yahaan par naa parwaanaa aaye
haay yahi hai tamannaa tere dar ke saamne
meri jaan jaaye meri jaan jaaye

mohabbat mein teri agar maut aaye
to wo maut kitni haseen maut hogi
kisi roz main teraa daaman pakadkar
jo mar jaaun kyaa dilnasheen maut hogi
agar koi aisi ghadi aa rahi hai
to meri duaa hai wo jaldi se aaye
haay yahi hai tamannaa tere dar ke saamne
meri jaan jaaye meri jaan jaaye

Being a lady (sort of) myself, I will vouch for the fact that Dharmendra need not dance! 🙂 Next to Shammi he is the best at enacting romantic songs. Love him!

Indeed I could have guessed how you feel about Dharmendra.

I second memsaab. Dharamendra has no need to dance! And while you are describing his attributes dont forget Rafi’s golden voice (which belongs to him, here) – anybody who can sing like that doesnt even need to look like Dharam paaji to sweep the ladies off their feet! 😉

Lovely !

Saw this movie not so long ago.

It has a couple of other famous songs…my fav is “main nigahen tere chehre”. It also has “agar mujhse mohabbat hai”. Typical Madan Mohan class.

I *love* his goofy dance moves. We love our Dharam just as he is and wouldn’t want him to turn into a Fred Astaire! Everything works here–it is a fun light hearted attempt to romance the heroine and even she is good here (but really wooden in the other songs).

Atul ji,

Since two three days since i saw the video of this song, i have been reverting to it again and again. It definitely is a very charming song. And the picturization, must be said that if it was anybody but Dharmendra, he might have looked awkward doing this. Dharmendra is unusually natural doing this.

Also i would like to Theme of leather and stiches is apt for this site. This songs are like ageing pure leather which get more graceful and vintage with age. And the stiches will represent the numerous songs. Of course it is just my opinion.

This is one of my favorite songs, and my late mother would have told you all that he was the hunk I drooled over as a teen, even while I considered Shammi Kapoor and Dev Anand my “heroes”! And as so many others have pointed out, who looks at his dancing when he is so good to look at? And, last but not least, Rafi’s voice is pure silk in this. No one but Rafi could have done justice to this song and to Dharam.

Dear Atul,
Why does R D Burman’s ‘Sagar Kinare’ sound similar to this song?

R. D. Burman re-used his own tune to make ‘Sagar kinaare dil yeh pukaare” .

Here is the link to the song from ‘bundalbaaz’
