Kaanta lagaa haay lagaa

Posted on: December 10, 2008

The present day Bollywood music fans know this song as one of the most popular remix. But as far as I am concerned, its original, both audio as well as the video, remains the best effort of them all, and by a long margin.

The original song “Kaanta laga” was from a 1972 movie called “Samadhi”. The movie was a moderate success, but I am told that this was a superb movie that deserved much better fate than that. Even its music suffered the same fate as that of the movie. I cannot understand that , since the songs of this movie are very good, and I am not talking about just “kaanta laga”.

In fact, “kaanta laga” was not all that popular among the songs from this movie.”jab tak rahe tan me jiya” sung by Asha Bhonsle was perhaps the most popular song from this movie, followed by a few more songs. “kaanta laga” was perhaps the least popular of all the songs from this movie.

How things have changed now. This song “kaanta laga” is easily the most copied, remixed, adopted, cover- versioned ( mutilated in most cases) song from the past.

The song was sung by Lata. Its lyrics were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music was composed by R D Burman. The lyrics by Majrooh are just mind blowing, and one is amazed at his imagination. He has come up with such a long and lucid song.

This has to be one of fastest songs sung in Bollywood. The song races along at a hectic pace, like a superfast train. I do not recall listening to a Bollywood song faster than this. After listening to this song, one has no option left but to admire the singing prowess of Lata.I thought that Asha Bhonsle along could do justice to a song like this, but Lata has just excelled in this song.

R D Burman was the hottest property among music director those days, and in this song he shows us why.

If a song can get its due thanks to remixes, then so be it. There are those who like the remixed version, but I love this original version.

“Daku” (bandit) movies were popular at that time, and a song and dance situation involving Asha Parekh / sadhana/ Helen was compulsory in such movies, which would be followed by the attack by daakus. “kaanta laga” song fulfils that requirement in this movie, with Asha Parekh the lead performer in the said song and dance situation.

bindiyaa chhipaaye re laali chunar odh ke moond ke mukhdaa apnaa
nikli andhere mein duniyaa ke dar se main sajnaa
bindiyaa chhipaaye re laali chunar odh ke moond ke mukhdaa apnaa
nikli andhere mein duniyaa ke dar se main sajnaa
raat bairan huyi o re saathiyaa
dekh haalat meri aa lekar jiyaa

bangle ke peechhe teri beri ke neeche
haay re piyaa aahaa re aahaa re aahaa re piyaa

bangle ke peechhe teri beri ke neeche
haay re piyaa

aayi museebat to ab sochti hoon main kyun rah saki naa tere bin
sach hi to kahtin thin sakhiyaan phansegi tu ik din
aayi museebat to ab sochti hoon main kyun rah saki naa tere bin
sach hi to kahtin thin sakhiyaan phansegi tu ik din
bhool to ho gayi jo kiyaa so kiyaa
tu bachaa le balam aaj meraa jiyaa
haay re
bangle ke peechhe teri beri ke neeche
haay re piyaa aahaa re aahaa re aahaa re piyaa
kaantaa lagaa
haay lagaa
haa aajaa haa raajaa
bangle ke peechhe teri beri ke neeche
haay re piyaa

sabko pukaare anaadi na samjhe ye milne kaa saaraa jatan hai
kaise bataaun ye chaahat ki sainyaan chubhan hai
sabko pukaare anaadi na samjhe ye milne kaa saaraa jatan hai
kaise bataaun ye chaahat ki sainyaan chubhan hai
ye wo kaantaa sajan jaaye lekar jiyaa
nain suyi lage to nikle piyaa
haay re
bangle ke peechhe teri beri ke neeche
haay re piyaa aahaa re aahaa re aahaa re piyaa
kaantaa lagaa
