Tum na jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye

Lata gave some haunting songs in 1960s under the music direction of Madan Mohan. During that time two major music directors of the day, viz O P Nayyar and S D Burman were creating their music without Lata.
O P Nayyar never worked with Lata, but S D Burman had used her voice in early 1950s and he had actually created songs that sounded just as great as the Lata-Madan Mohan songs.
Here is an immortal song from “Sazaa” (1951) to demonstate what I mean. What a timeless classic this song is !
The song was picturised on Nimmi where she reminisces about her past, including about Dev Anand, her hero in this movie.

Song-Tum na jaane kis jahan me kho gaye (Sazaa) (1951) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD- S D Burman
Lyrics
tum naa jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye
tum naa jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye
ham bhari duniyaa mein tanhaa ho gaye
tum naa jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye
maut bhi aati nahin, aas bhi jaati nahin
maut bhi aati nahin, aas bhi jaati nahin
dil ko ye kyaa ho gayaa, koyi shai bhaati nahin
loot kar meraa jahaan chhup gaye ho tum kahaan
loot kar meraa jahaan chhup gaye ho tum kahaan
tum kahaan, tum kahaan, tum kahaan
tum naa jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye
ek jaan aur laakh gham, ghut ke rah jaaye na dam
ek jaan aur laakh gham, ghut ke rah jaaye na dam
aao tum ko dekh len, doobti nazron se ham
loot kar meraa jahaan chhup gaye ho tum kahaan
loot kar meraa jahaan chhup gaye ho tum kahaan
tum kahaan, tum kahaan, tum kahaan
tum naa jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye
ham bhari duniyaa mein tanhaa ho gaye
tum naa jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye…

Correction in third line of 1st stanza :
maut bhi aati nahin, aas bhi jaati nahin
dil ko ye kyaa ho gayaa, koyi ” shai ” bhaati nahin
I wouldnt have guessed it to be SDB song. Style is so different from his songs in later years.

lovely song, thanks for introducing me to it. I love Sahir’s lyrics, when you get time I’d love to have translations for them…he’s so poetic.
