Lakdi ki kaathi kaathi pe ghoda

Posted on: December 9, 2008

“Masoom” was one movie that took a western story, indigenised it and improved upon the original. And it is no mean feat seeing that the original story was “Man, woman and Child” written by Eric Segal which was also made into an American movie of the same name.

The creators of “Masoom” showed how to improve upon the original and come up with a masterpiece. The starcast, the acting, the situations depicted in the movie were so realistic that the movie won over the hearts of the audience.

Bollywood movies had an aditional ingredient in them that Hollywood does not have, viz`songs. 😉 And the songs of “Masoom” were just as likeable as its storyline.

The one song of “Masoom” that has qickly become a favourite of kids and their parents is this childen’s song “lakdi ki kaathi, kaathi pe ghoda”. Gulzar, that genius lyricist has written a masterpiece that has kept childern and their parents amused for 25 years.

The song was sung by three kids which was a refreshing change from the practice of grownup female singers giving playback for kids.

When it comes to the picturisation, it is so amusing to watch Jugal Hansraj and Urmila Matondkar ( who became teenage heratthrobs one decade later) as small kids. And all the three kids ( I have no idea who is the youngest kid) in this song are so cute.

Gulzar and R D Burman had great undesrstanding and they have collaborated in creating many memoravble sogs. This was one such memorable song.

Song-lakdi ki kaathi kaathi pe ghoda (Masoom)(1982) Singers-Vanita Mishra, Gurpreet Kaur, Gauri Bapat, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD- R D Burman

My granddaughter watches this song about ten times daily and sometimes more. She loves it and starts dancing to the song, and also joins in the lalala… part. What I like best is that whenever she sees me on Skype these days, she promptly looks for the remote and turns this song on, and then shows me her dancing1 One more connection -thanks to Gulzar and you, Atul, for giving me this quick access!
