Jaise Radha ne maala japi

on:In 1970s, Bollywood heroines were not supposed to marry and have kids in a movie.Being cast in such a role was supposed to be the sign of her being considered over the hill.
This movie breaks that taboo. In this movie, Mumtaz is shown getting married to Dev Saab, and as a later song would show, the two sing an “expectant parents” song as well in the movie.
But for the time being, it is a “wedding” song that we are talking about. This song “Jaise Radha ne mala japi Shyaam ki” depicts Mumtaz’s love for Dev Saab, and the song also shows the two of them getting married and then settling into domestic bliss.
This movie was a better made movie than tthe usual Bollywood fare, and not surprisingly this movie crashed at the box office. The Bollywood movie watchers never really want to grow from the m ake believe Bollywood world of song and dance. Try to show them movies with freal life concerns, and that is how they react.
Coming to the songs, though, the songs were hits, and remain popular to this day. S D Burman, like many leading music directors of the day, could churn popular music even when the movie itself would flop. The lyricist is Neeraj, who those days was a regular lyricist with S D Burman.

Lyrics
preet kyaa judi
preet kyaa judi, dor kyaa bandhi
binaa jatan binaa yatan ho gayi main nayi
preet kyaa judi, dor kyaa bandhi
binaa jatan binaa yatan ho gayi main nayi
binaa mol ki main biki, binaa daam ki
raadhaa ne maalaa japi shyaam ki
maine odhi chunariyaa tere naam ki
kyaa tarang hai
kyaa tarang hai, kyaa umang hai
more ang ang rachaa pi kaa rang hai
kyaa tarang hai, kyaa umang hai
more ang ang rachaa pi kaa rang hai
sharm aayi, kaise kahoon baat shyaam ki
raadhaa ne maalaa japi shyaam ki
maine odhi chunariyaa tere naam ki
paa liyaa tujhe, paa liyaa
paa liyaa tujhe, paayi har khushi
chaahoon baar baar chadhoon teri paalki
paa liyaa tujhe, paayi har khushi
chaahoon baar baar chadhoon teri paalki

Contrarily the movie was very well accepted and appreciated. Acting talents of all the lead actors were also very well appreciated especially Hema Malini whose role was etched out a bit on her real life (at that point of her life).
S.D.Burman as usual churned out excellent tunes.
