Chaman ke phool bhi

Posted on: January 25, 2009

In Bollywood movies, only hero and heroine seem to have tender feelings seeing that only they get to sing romantic songs. Villains on the other hand seem to have hearts made of granite and they do not have any tender feelings of love etc.

Also, only young people seem to have such feelings,. Middle aged people ( viz parents of the lead actors) were not supposed to show feelings of love either.

So it is a refreshing change to see a villain ( middle aged too) singing a romantic song with a middle aged woman. The movie is “Shikari” (1963) and this song shows Ajit ( arch villain, who was the hero of this movie) singing a romantic song with a woman ( Raagini). Unlike younger girls, who would blush all the time in a romantic song for no apparent reasons, she does not seem to blush. Why should I blush just because it is a romantic song, seems to be her view. And I agree with her. Romantic song should be about showing love for each other, and not about blushing un necessarily.

That way, I quite liked the picturisation of this song.

The song is sung by Rafi, and the lyricist is Farooque Qaisar. I has never heard this song before but listening to this song a few times has made me a fan of this song. The song begins slowly, but as it progresses, it begins to grow on the listener, and by the time the song ends, the listener is totally sold on the song.

G S Kohli, who worked as assistants to many established music directors in the past ( I recall that he was the assistant to O P Nayyar in Howrah Bridge) gave some spectacular music in this movie. Who can forget ” tumko piya dil diya kitne naaz se” from this same movie ? That song has also been posted in this blog.

Song-Chaman ke phool bhi (Shikari) (1963) Singers-Rafi, Lata, Lyrics-Farooque Qaisar, MD-G S Kohli

Lyrics

ho ho
Chaman ke phool bhi tujhko gulaab kahte hain
Chaman ke phool bhi tujhko gulaab kahte hain
hamin nahi hain sabhi
hamin nahi hain sabhi laajawaab kahte hain
nazar milaake mere
nazar milaake mere dil ki baat kahte hain
suna hai chhehre ko
suna hai chhehre ko dil ki kitaab kahte hain
Chaman ke phool bhi tujhko

Saaj e dil chhed diya hai to ye naghma sun lo
Saaj e dil chhed diya hai to ye naghma sun lo
bikhri bikhri hain mere pyar ki kiranen chun lo
isi kiran ko sanam
isi kiran ko sanam aaftaab kahte hain
Hamin nahin
Hamin nahin
Hamin nahin hain sabhi laajawaab kahte hain
Chaman ke phool bhi tujhko

Chashme hairaan ki kasam zulf e pareshaan ki kasam
Chashme hairaan ki kasam zulf e pareshaan ki kasam
maang lo jaan tumhe aaj meri jaan ki kasam
ghazab ki baat hai ye
ghazab ki baat hai ye kya janaab kahte hain
hamin nahi haay
hamin nahi
hamin nahi hain sabhi laajawaab kahte hain
Chaman ke phool bhi tujhko

Aaj tak dekhi nahin aisi bahakti aankhen
Aaj tak dekhi nahin aisi bahakti aankhen
daal do har se in aankhon me chhalaakt aankhen
sambhal ke peena ise
sambhal ke peena ise sab sharaab kahte hain
hamin nahi haay
hamin nahi
hamin nahi hain sabhi laajawaab kahte hain
Chaman ke phool bhi tujhko gulaab kahte hain
hamin nahi hain sabhi laajawaab kahte hain
nazar milaake mere dil bhi baat kahte hain
suna hai chhehre ko dil ki kitaab kahte hain
Chaman ke phool bhi tujhko

Atul, the girl is Ragini, younger sister of Padmini, and I remember this song because it is a beauty. i had just forgotten about it all these days! I found I remembered all the lyrics once I saw the opening lines, and they are so beautiful. I don’t know if this song was popular in its time, but I found it on a cassette that I borrowed from someone and dubbed, and I fell in love with it. Thanks for this gem.

Very nice song. I have heard this before but not very much. I don’t think it was a popular song.

Btw, at that time, I don’ think Ajit was a villain. He used to do hero roles. I think he became a villain only around 1967 or so, with movies like Suraj.
