Babul ki duaayen leti ja

on:This song from “Neelkamal” (1968) has become immortal as the greatest “Bidaai” song of all time that Bollywood has come up with. And as happened with most iconic songs of Bollywood, this song too is a creation of Ravi, the underestimated music director who in fact went to have one of the longest and most successful career as a music director.
This song was written by Sahir Ludhianvi and the song was immortalised by Rafi who sang this song with feeling. Rafi’s own daughter was getting married those days, and Rafi sang this song from his heart as if he was really singing this song as the father of the bride.
In the movie, Balraj Sahni plays the bride’s father and Waheeda Rehhman plays the bride.
Picturisation of the first two minutes of the song is very good, but I find that the picturisation of the subsequent portion of the song was far too melodramatic and unreal.
This picturisation shows Balraj Sahni going to visit his daughter and finding her being treated as a slave.
The picturisation shows her in- laws owning a huge palatial residence like that of Nizam of Hyderabad, and they make Waheeda Rahman work like a housemaid who is supposed to dust the entire palace , wash all the household utensils etc. I find this picturisation far too unrealistic and unbelievable. This unrealistic picturisation does not do justice to the song, I believe.
The audio of the song is a phenomenon though. What a song ! Kudos to rafi, ravi and Sahir Ludhianvi for this gem. This one songitself is enough to assure them immortality in the annals of Bollywood music.

Lyrics
baabul ki duaayen leti jaa jaa tujhko sukhi sansaar mile
baabul ki duaayen leti jaa jaa tujhko sukhi sansaar mile
maike ki kabhi naa yaad aaye sasuraal mein itnaa pyaar mile
baabul ki duaayen leti jaa jaa tujhko sukhi sansaar mile
beete tere jeewan ki ghadiyaan aaraam ki thandi chaaon mein
kaantaa bhi na chubhne paaye kabhi meri laadli tere paanvon mein
us dwaar se bhi dukh door rahen jis dwaar se teraa dwaar mile
maike ki kabhi naa yaad aaye sasuraal me itna pyaar mile
baabul ki duaayen leti jaa jaa tujhko sukhi sansaar mile
baabul ki duaayen leti jaa jaa tujhko sukhi sansaar mile
baabul ki duaayen leti jaa jaa tujhko sukhi sansaar mile
maike ki kabhi naa yaad aaye sasuraal me itna pyaar mile
maike ki kabhi naa yaad aaye sasuraal me itna pyaar mile
jis ghar se bandhe hain bhaag tere us ghar mein sadaa teraa raaj rahe
honthon pe hansi ki dhoop khile maathe pe khushi kaa taaj rahe
kabhi jiski jot na ho pheeki tujhe aisaa roop-singaar mile
maike ki kabhi naa yaad aaye sasuraal me itna pyaar mile
beete tere jeewan ki ghadiyaan aaraam ki thandi chhaanvon mein
kaantaa bhi na chubhne paaye kabhi meri laadli tere paanvon mein
us dwaar se bhi dukh door rahen jis dwaar se teraa dwaar mile
maike ki kabhi na yaad aaye sasuraal me itna pyaar mile

This song is in my wedding video at bidai and baharoon phool barsao when I arrived at the stage. My hubby sang chaudhvin ka chand ho to me after bidai. These songs are intergral part of my life.

This is an evergreen song. I was popular in all weddings and people shed tears even if they heard the same song the day before at another wedding…
You are missing a great dance song from this movie. Waheeda ji dances on- Aao ni sakhiyon, aao ni kudiyon dekho baat nirali….
Would be great to have it on your website.

What a fantastic song by Rafi saab !!!
But what a hugely disappointing movie.
I don’t know if you have seen this movie, Atul, but it is really one of the most disappointing movies I have ever seen. Maybe because I had high hopes from it, having waited for decades to see it.
And then when I did get to see it, I found it a massive let-down.
But this song itself – superb.
