Meena Kumari is regarded as the first great tragedy queen of Bollywood movies. But in reality that crown rightfully belongs to Nutan. Nutan had begun playing tragic roles as early as 1955 when Meena Kumari was still playing happy bubbly roles.
The first movie where Nutan played a sad tragic role was in “Seema” (1955). Though Nutan played the central role, this movie had some great songs sung by male singers as well. I have already posted a great Rafi song from this movie viz “kahaan jaa raha hai”.
Here is an equally well known ( or perhaps better known) song from this movie. This song “tu pyaar ka saagar hai” is in fact an iconic song. It was sung by Manna Dey. Shailendra was the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan had composed the music of this song.

Excellent song!! One of the greatest of Manna Dey’s many good songs. True, it is depressing but it touches the heart so intensely, that it is hard to forget.

As I listen to this song, I never fail to get depressed…something about the combination of music, what the lyrics evoke and most of all Manna Dey’s voice- I don’t really know why.
So I try not to listen to it too often, as it is “depression song” in my category!
