Raat nikhri huyi zulf bikhri huyi

When we watch old Bollywood movies , we tend to have stereotypical images of certain characters of these movies. For example, we tend to think that villains and dancers were supposed to have no lives and no feelings unlike the heroes and heroines of the movies.
Take Helen for instance. People would discuss about the personal lives of heroines ad infinitum, but everyone tended to take Helen for granted. It was as if being a one song wonder was the destiny of Helen and she did not deserve any more.
I find that Helen too aspired to have bigger roles in movies if only she got a chance. And in some movies, she actually got bigger roles. She in fact played the lead female role in a few movies in 1960s. But unfortunately things did not work out well, and she continued to be typecast as a cabaret dancer.
Here is a song from “Ham Hindustani”. This is a solo song sung by Mukesh. It is picturised on Joy Mukherjee and a ptretty looking Helen playing a Bhartiya Nari kind of a role, sticking a Bindi in her forehead and dressed more modestly than usual for her. But she is so typecast in the minds of her fans that the fans half expect her to suddenly shed her storyline imposed restrictions and start dancing.
This song was written by a lyricist called K Manohar who was none other than Manohar lal Khanna, father of Usha Khanna. Usha Khanna was the music director. And this is a song that I have listened for the first time only just now. And I must say I liked this song. The audio of the song, as well as the picturisation, is good.

Song-Raat nikhri huyi zulf bikhri huyi(Ham Hindustani) (1960) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-K Manohar, MD-Usha Khanna
Lyrics
raat nikhri huyi, zulf bikhri huyi
har adaa teri phoolon ki daali
aaj subah nahin hone waali
aaj subah nahin hone waali
raat nikhri huyi, zulf bikhri huyi
har adaa teri phoolon ki daali
aaj subah nahin hone waali
aaj subah nahin hone waali
raat nikhri huyi
ye samaa tham gayaa, ye haseen adaayen dekhke
ye samaa tham gayaa, ye haseen adaayen dekhke
dhadkanen so gayin, ye nasheeli aankhen dekhke
dekhke
raat nikhri huyi, zulf bikhri huyi
har adaa teri phoolon ki daali
aaj subah nahin hone waali
aaj subah nahin hone waali
raat nikhri huyi
rang bhari mastiyaan, ye bahaaron ke kaafile
rang bhari mastiyaan, ye bahaaron ke kaafile
ham chale tum chale koyi saath saath chal diye
chal diye
raat nikhri huyi, zulf bikhri huyi
har adaa teri phoolon ki daali
aaj subah nahin hone waali
aaj subah nahin hone waali
raat nikhri huyi
