Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Haay sharmaaun kis kis ko bataaun

Posted on: July 26, 2009

How did one jugde the popularity of a song in the olden days ? One way was to listen to the Binaca geetmala coundown show. Another was to find out what songs were being requested the most in “Aaphi ke geet” farmaishi programmes by the farmaish senders of Jhumri Tilaiyaa.

There was another way, if one gave it a thought. Just find out which songs people tended to sing in cultural programmes. In 1960s and 1970s, I was growing up in the eastern parts of India, where Durga Puja was a big deal. Every colony would have their own Durga Puja. In the nights, there would be a cultural programme in which the residents of the colony would participate. The cultural programme included dramas as well as songs. Needless to say, movie songs were the most popular among the participants as well as the audience.

In one year in early 1970s, I found that many lady singers came up on stage and sang movie songs of their choice. And it so happened that their choices were the same. Every singer sang the same song. It shows how popular that song was with the ladies of that colony.

And this song was “haay sharmaaun kis kis ko bataaun “. I as a member of the audience wondered why these ladies could not think of any other songs except this one !

This may give people some idea of the popularity of this song those days.

I as a kid was not aware about the details of this song. Now I know that this song is from “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” (1971). This song is sung wonderfully well, and with pasion, by Lata. And this is yet another song where Laxmi Chhaaya got to sing and dance in this movie.

Anand Bakshi wrote the song and Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music.

This song is full of joie de vivre. This song had cast a spell over people in early 1970s. Listen to this song and watch its picturisation to have an idea why.

Song-Haay sharmaaun kis kis ko bataaun(Mera Gaaon Mera Desh) ( 1971) Singers-Lata ,Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

haay sharmaaun uuun
haay sharmaaun

haay sharmaaun
kis kis ko bataaun
aise kaise main sunaaun sab ko
apni prem kahaaniyaan
apni prem kahaaniyaan

pahli nishaani
main hoo jiski deewaani
pahli nishaani
main hoo jiski deewaani
rut jaisi toofaani
aisi uski jawaani
rut jaisi toofaani
aisi uski jawaani
mastaani
uske aage
pheeki laage haay sabki jawaaniyaan
haay sharmaaun
kis kis ko bataaun
aise kaise main sunaaun sab ko
apni prem kahaaniyaan
apni prem kahaaniyaan

kala kambal kaali kameez

kurta hai neela rang pagdee ka peela
kurta hai neela rang pagdee ka peela
roop uska kateela
aisa hai wo chaabeela
roop uska kateela
aisa hai wo chaabeela
rangeela
chaal sharaabi
rang gulaabi
te ankhaa mastaaniyaan
haay sharmaaun
kis kis ko bataaun
aise kaise main sunaaun sab ko
apni prem kahaaniyaan
apni prem kahaaniyaan

aankho ko meenche
dekho saanson ko kheenche
aankho ko meenche
dekho saanson ko kheenche
wahaan peepal ke neeche
mele me sabse peeche
wahaan peepal ke neeche
mele me sabse peeche
khadaa hai
neend udaaye
chain churaaye
te sare beimaaniyaan
haay sharmaaun
kis kis ko bataaun
aise kaise main sunaaun sab ko
apni prem kahaaniyaan
apni prem kahaaniyaan
baalmaa ki
jaalma ki
haay teen nishaaniyaan
haay sharmaaun
kis kis ko bataaun
aise kaise main sunaaun sab ko
apni prem kahaaniyaan
apni prem kahaaniyaan

This is a lovely song by Lata.
Wonderfully picturised on Laxmi Chhaya.
LC is supposed to give away the identity of the dacoit via this song.
Hence references towards that end in this song (“peepal ke neeche, mele mein sab ke peechhe”).

Yes, the picturisation of the song is wonderful. Indeed, everything about this song is wonderful.

I just realised that the lyrics of this song is quite lengthy too. Of course I did not realise that while I was typing it down. I was enjoying listening to the song all the time.

Great passionate dance by Laxmi Chhaya. She looks smashing in her sari choli.
