on:Wow! What a song this one is. I have been listening to this song for a long time. In my younger days, when I disliked “old” songs, I still subconsciously felt that this song was special. And now that I have no such dislikings, I find that this song is an incredibly melodious song.
Suraiyya’s voice is magical, and so is the case with the music of Husnlal Bhagatram. And let us not forget the lyrics of Rajinder Krishan. I have noticed that Rajinder Krishan has written lots and lots of songs that have gone on to become timeless and iconic songs. I this song is very much a timeless and iconic song.
This song is from a movie called “Pyaar ki jeet” (1948).
Song-Tere naino ne chori kiya mera chhota sa jiyaa (Pyaar ki jeet) (1948) Singer- Suraiyya, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram
Lyrics
tere nainon ne
tere nainon ne chori kiyaa
meraa chhotaa sa jiyaa
paradesiyaa
haay tere nainon ne
tere nainon ne chori kiyaa
meraa chhotaa sa jiyaa
paradesiyaa
haay tere nainon ne
tere nainon ne chori kiyaa
jaane kaisaa jaadu kiyaa,
teri meethi meethi baat ne
teraa meraa pyaar huaa,
pahli mulaaqaat mein
jaane kaisaa jaadu kiyaa,
teri meethi meethi baat ne
teraa meraa pyaar huaa,
pahli mulaaqaat mein
pahli mulaaqaat mein
haay tere nainon ne
tere nainon ne chori kiyaa,
meraa chhotaa sa jiyaa
paradesiyaa
haay tere nainon ne
tere nainon ne chori kiyaa
haathon mein haath leke,
kabhi bhi naa chhodnaa
pyaar ki ye dor sainyya,
baandh ke naa todnaa
haathon mein haath leke,
kabhi bhi naa chhodnaa
pyaar ki ye dor sainyya,
baandh ke naa todnaa
baandh ke naa todnaa
haay tere nainon ne
tere nainon ne chori kiyaa,
meraa chhotaa sa jiyaa
paradesiyaa
haay tere nainon ne
tere nainon ne chori kiyaa,
meraa chhotaa sa jiyaa
paradesiyaa
haay tere nainon ne
tere nainon ne chori kiyaa

Do you know who this song is picturized on? I know Suraiyya sang mostly for herself, but Madhubala really fits this song so well.

Lalithaji, this song was picturized on Suriyya.. What an era was that when artists sang their own songs and did not depend on playback singers. Suriyya, Shyam, Ashok Kumar, Surendra all sang their own songs. Suriyya and Shyam were outstanding in “Dillagi”. Tu mera chand mei tere chandni” and ” Zalim zamana mujko tumse chuda raha hai” These songs are still in our hearts.

I just love this song, and I am so glad that you have posted it. It is a song full of life, and a picker-upper. The lyrics are so simple, but they convey the feeling of a young girl in love so beautifully, and her voice gives the impression of youth and love and happiness. Madhubala completes the picture. Thanks, Atul!
