In Bollywood movie songs, “dil” (heart” ) is an important subject of songs. In these songs, “dil” is desrcibed like it is a glassware. It gets broken, and also stolen- and that too at the hands of the beloved.
In case one wants to write a light “hearted” song on the subject of “heart” then what does one do ? Well, one makes use of some other less explored property of the heart. Yes, “dil”, like any item, has chemical and physical properties. For instance, it beats.
The lyricist Rajinder Krishan uses this property of “dil” to liken it to a watch. Now I have never “watch”ed an analog watch beating like a heart, though quartz watches indeed function on this principle. But then quartz watches were not in existence those days. If Rajinder Krishan still came up with this song then it shows just how well read he was ! Even in 1965, he knew about quartz watches when they were the stuff of science fiction. 😉
This song is from an obscure movie called “Bombay Race Course” (1965). It is one among the several forgotten movies in which Madan Mohan had the mortification of seeing his well crafted music being wasted and going down the drain because very few people actually watched the movie and heard the songs.
Madan Mohan’s music is similarly light hearted, as is Rafi’s singing. This movie had Ajit and Nalini Jaiwant in lead roles with K N Singh and Minu Mumtaz also there, but that does not necessarily mean that this sung was picturised on Ajit, though that is a strong possibility.
Song-Le gayaa zaalim ghadi samajh ke mera dhadakta dil (Bombay Race Course) (1965) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics
Le gayaa zaalim ghadi samajhke
mera dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
le gayaa zaalim ghadi samajhke
mera dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
na koyi sauda
na koyi keemat
na parchi
na bill
le gayaa zaalim ghadi samajhke
mera dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
ik din yaaron hame bhi duniya
kahti thi dilwaala
ik din yaaron hame bhi duniya
kahti thi dilwaala
kismat phooti
pad gaya ik nakhrewaali se paalaa
gaya haath se dil aisa
ham ho gaye muntize dil
Le gaya zaalim ghadi samajhke
mera dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
gayaa chor bazaar wo zaalim
bhaav padaa ik aana
mahange daam khareede koi
kyun kar maal puraanaa
aakhir aashique ka dil thaa
na thaa dilbar qaatil (?)
le gaya zaalim ghadi samajhke
mera dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
maal bikaa na jab chori ka
to dilbar pachhtaaya
ohh
arre maal bikaa na jab chori ka
to dilbar pachhtaaya
hokar aakhir sharmsaar
dil waapas karne aaya
hamne kah kar de di izaajat
jab gaya jagah se gaya hil
le gaya zaalim ghadi samajhke
mera dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
na koyi sauda
na koyi keemat
na parchi
na bill
le gaya zaalim ghadi samajhke
mera dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil
dhadakta dil

I have been listening to this song a lot now – it is getting kind of addictive. 🙂
And your description of the “dil” as a “watch” (but not a quartz watch) is just hilarious !!! I love reading your descriptions. 🙂
