Ae gham e dil kyaa karoon

Posted on: March 7, 2010

“Thokar” (1953) is one of the very first movies of Shammi Kapoor. Here Shammi Kapoor and Shyama were the lead actors.

This movie had a superb ghazal that was sung separately by Talat Mehmood and Asha Bhonsle, and they were picturised on Shammi Kapoor and Shyama respectively. The lyricist is Majaz Lucknowi and music is composed by Sardar Malik.

What a superb song it is.

Talat Mehmood/ Shammi Kapoor version

Asha Bhonsle/Shyama version

Song-Ae gham e dil kyaa karoon (Thokar) (1953) Singers-Talat Mehmood/ Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majaz Lucknowi, MD-Sardar Malik

Lyrics

—————————————-
Talat Mehmood version

shahar ki raat aur main
naashaad-o-naakaaraa firoon
jagmagaati jaagti,
sadakon pe aawaaraa firoon

ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
ai vahshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kyaa karoon, kyaa karoon
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
ai vahshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kyaa karoon, kyaa karoon
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon

ye roopahli chhaanv
ye aakaash par taaron kaa jaal
ye roopahli chhaanv
ye aakaash par taaron kaa jaal
jaise soofi kaa tasavvur,
jaise aashiq kaa khayaal
aah lekin kaun samjhe,
kaun jaane dil kaa haal
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
ai vahshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kyaa karoon, kyaa karoon
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon

raaste mein ruk ke dam loon,
ye meri aadat nahin
raaste mein ruk ke dam loon,
ye meri aadat nahin
laut kar waapas chalaa jaaun
meri fitrat nahin
aur koyi hamanawaa mil jaaye ye qismat nahin
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
ai vahshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kyaa karoon, kyaa karoon
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon

———————————
Asha Bhonsle version

aaa aaa
aaa
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
ai vahshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kyaa karoon, kyaa karoon
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
ai vahshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kyaa karoon, kyaa karoon
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon

mujhko qismat ne banaaya, gandle paani ka kanval
khaaq mein mil mil gaye sab, aarzoo ke ye mahal
kyaa khabar thi yoon meri taqdeer jaayegi badal
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
ai vahshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kyaa karoon, kyaa karoon
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon

roothne waale kisi,
majboor se roothegaa kyaa
jis tarah qismat ne loota, yoon koyi lootega kyaa
ae mere toote huye dil, aur tu tootega kyaa
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
ai vahshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kyaa karoon, kyaa karoon
ai gham-e-dil kyaa karoon

Thokar was great break for both Shammi Kapoor and Shyama, establishing them as lead actors. Later years Guru Dutt picked Shyama up his lead lady in Aar Paar.
I talked to Shammi Kapoorji a few years ago while he was shootinhg a film in Scotland. When we talked about Thokar, he asked me if I had the film as he would really like to see it again.I too would like to see it but I believe that there is no print existing.I have just have a 45 rpm record of the film.
Both versions are superbly written and full marks to Sardar Mallikji, father of present Anu Mallick, who did not get his fair share of recognition.

Several earlier movies of Shammi Kapoor are lost as their prints are no longer available.

I love this song by Talat Mahmood. I have sung this a lot without realising that it was a Shammi Kapoor movie. Of course this was Shammi in his pre “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” avatar. 🙂

Majaz Lucknowi was the brother-in-law of Jaan Nissar Akhtar and maternal uncle of Javed Akhtar. Talat version of his ghazal was taken from Majaz’s published work. Second and third couplets of Asha version were written by Baldev or (Balwant?) Tandon.
