O babu o babu o jaane waale babu ek paisa de de

Music director Ravi (full name Ravishankar Sharma) does not occupy as much mindshare in public mind as many other music directors of the golden era of Bollywood movie music do . Many younger music lovers in fact ask “Ravi who ?” when his name crops up in discussions.

It is my observation that Ravi has often been an underestimated and unheralded music director. If one makes a list of the most well known iconic Bollywood songs of all time, then the songs composed by Ravi will outnumber the songs composed by all other music directors. It is just that most fans , while enjoying Ravi’s works, are unaware that the song that they so enjoy is composed by Ravi.

The first movie for Ravi as an independent music director was “Vachan” (1955). Ravi began creating iconic songs from his debut movie itself. Which was this iconic song ? This song was “Chandaa Mama door ke”, which to this day remains a definitive song sung by mothers to their young ones.

There was a song in “Vachan” that went “O babu o babu o jaanewaale babu ek paisa de de”. This song is a poignant song. But the beggars of India adopted it as their national anthem. This song remained on the lips of beggars for more than a decade. It was given up in 1967 only to be replaced by another iconic beggar song from “Dus Laakh” (1967). This song was once again composed by Ravi himself !

Here is this iconic beggar song from “Vachan” (1955). It is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. I am not familiar with the actors on whom this song is picturised. I request my knowledgeable readers to inform me about their identities so that I may be able to add this information here.

Prem Dhawan is the lyricist of this song.

This song is fact has an Asha solo version too, but that song does not seem to be available anywhere.

teri jeb rahe na khaali
o o o o
teri jeb rahe na khaali
teri roz mane deewaali

tu hamdam mauz udaaye
kabhi na dukh paaye
o babu
ek paisaa de de

ye bachha duaayen degaa
tera bigdaa kaam banegaa

pet ki khaatir bane bhikaari
phirte dar dar maare
pet ki khaatir bane bhikaari
phirte dar dar maare
aankh se andhaa bapu mera
aankh se andhaa bapu mera
pag pag thokar khaaye
chalaa nahin jaaye
o babu
ek paisa de de
ek paisa de de
ek paisa de de

WAQT and GUMRAAH –these two movies songs are very melodiously directed by Ravi…….
And it is noticed that Ravi had used very talently voice of Asha Bhonsle.

Atul, I remember this movie Vachan. The begger is an extra but the other scene shows Badrinath and Gita Bali. There is another good song by Mohamed Rafi and Asha picturised on a horse tanga. This I heard from music director Ravi. His name is Ravi Shanker, but when he entered the film industry in early fifties,he felt that his name would be confused with Sitar Maestro Ravi Shanker. So he dropped the shanker and only kept Ravi. Ravi is a also a good singer, not to C.Ramchandra- Chitlaker fame.

That tanga song is also posted in this blog.

I also agree that Ravi (along with Roshan) was underestimated.

In addition to (as pointed out by “Nruti”) Waqt & Gumrah, Ravi also had following gems:

Chaudhvin Ka Chand
Gharana – Won “Best MD Filmfare Award”
China Town
Kaajal
Khandan – Won “Best MD Filmfare Award”
Do Badan
Dhund
Mehmaan
Ek Phool Do Mali
Ankhen
Do Kaliyaan
Neel Kamal
Hamraaz
Nikaah

I read somewhere that he was assistant to Hemant Kumar (durig Maagin ..man dole mera).
