Wo jo milte the kabhi hamse deewaanon ki tarah

Posted on: May 25, 2010

After posting an untypical Madan Mohan song, here is a song that bears the hallmark of a typical Madan Mohan song. It is a ghazal, it is sung by Lata, and it is picturised on Meena Kumari !

I had listened to this song many a times in the past, and I could identify it as a Madan Mohan creation, but I was not aware about other details of this song. I became aware of this detail only just now because of the farmaish of Lalitha for this song.

The song is “wo jo milte the kabhi hamse deewaanon ki tarah” from “Akeli Mat Jaiyo” (1963). Like many Madan Mohan ghazals, this ghazal too is regarded as an immortal composition.

This song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

It is a nice song that one can keep listening many times. Of course, one can say that about many songs created by Madan Mohan.

Song-Wo jo milte the kabhi ham se deewaanon ki tarah (Akeli Mat Jaiyo) (1963) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

wo jo milte the kabhi
ham se deewaanon ki tarah
aaj yoon milte hain
jaise kabhi pehchaan na thi
wo jo milte the kabhi
ham se deewaanon ki tarah
aaj yoon milte hain
jaise kabhi pehchaan na thi
wo jo milte the kabhi

dekhte bhi hain to yoon meri nigaahon mein kabhi
ajnabi jaise milaa karte hain raahon mein kabhi
is qadar unki nazar ham se to anjaan na thi
wo jo milte the kabhi
ham se deewaanon ki tarah
aaj yoon milte hain
jaise kabhi pehchaan na thi
wo jo milte the kabhi

ek din thaa kabhi yoon bhi jo machal jaate the
khelte the meri zulfon se
bahal jaate the
wo pareshaan the
meri zulf pareshaan na thi
wo jo milte the kabhi
ham se deewaanon ki tarah
aaj yoon milte hain
jaise kabhi pehchaan na thi
wo jo milte the kabhi

wo muhabbat wo sharaarat
mujhe yaad aati hai
dil mein ik pyaar kaa toofaan uthaa jaati thi
thi magar aisi to uljhan mein meri jaan na thi
wo jo milte the kabhi
ham se deewaanon ki tarah
aaj yoon milte hain
jaise kabhi pehchaan na thi
wo jo milte the kabhi

I like this song a lot and remember giving a farmaish about a month ago. Am glad that Lalitha also gave a farmaish to strengthen the case of this song. 🙂
Meena Kumari was at her peak, I think, around this time.

Yes, if farmaish comes from Jhumri Talaiyaa as well as from Dalli Rajhara then Radio Ceylon is bound to play the farmaish sooner. 🙂

Dalli Rajhara? Jhumri Talaiya? I am hearing those names after a long time, actually I don’t remember the first one, but the second one, yes. I used to wonder if all the people of JT were actually writing postcards daily with their farmaishes on them.

Thanks for playing that song, Atul! It definitely has all the Madan Mohan characteristics, including the one where the movie wasn’t much of a hit! However, the songs were memorable. It almost seems as if she is floating on air and the words are coming with the breeze. Thanks again, Atul!
