Bar dance aka cabarat dance came into existence in Bollywood movies in 1950s and it became a staple diet in mainstream movies. It became so popular that even non mainstream movies began to have them.
B grade movies, which often had Sheikh Mukhtaar or Dara Singh in them, always had such dances as an integral part of their plot. The hero, while chasing the baddies, would arrive at a bar, where a bar girl would approach him and make advances on the hero. On being spurned by the virtuous hero, a cabart song would commence.
Here is one such archtypical cabarat song from a movie called “Badaa Aadmi” (1961). I can immediately identify Sheikh Mukhtaar as the hero, but who is the bar dancer ? I am sure my knowledgeable readers will be able to identify her easily. Here she sings a lovely song in Geeta Dutt’s seductive voice. The song is written by Prem Dhawan and music is created by Chitragupta. The song is quite a racy song, that lost no time growing up upon me.
deewaane aa
deewaane aa
zaraa nazren milaa
aise na jaa
aayegaaaa phir
aayegaa phir jaane kab ye samaa
kisko pataa
deewaane aa
palkein bichhaayin hain tere liye
mere liye
thoda to thahar jaa mere liye
palkein bichhaayin hain tere liye
thoda to thahar jaa mere liye
dil ko hamare aise na thukraa
dil ko hamare aise na thukraa
deewaane aa
deewaane aa zaraa nazren milaa
aise na jaa
deewaane aa
yaa to mehfil mein
aate nahin
aa gaye to phir ye jaate nahin
yaa to mehfil mein
aate nahin
aa gaye to phir ye jaate nahin
aise chal dena
kahaan ki hai adaa
aise chal dena
kahaan ki hai adaa
deewaane aa
deewaane aa
zara nazrein milaa
aise na jaa
aayegaa phir
aayegaa phir jaane kab ye samaa
kisko pataa
deewaane aa
