Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Sun jaa pukaar

Posted on: July 11, 2010

These days I am posting songs from “Phagun” (1958). Here is another song from this movie.

This song, like many other songs from this movie, is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Madhubala. This is a bullock cart song in the sense that Madhubala is seated on a bullockcart, and she sings this song and remembering he beloved, viz Bharat Bhushan.

After her song ends, the theme music of the movie, viz a flute tune is heard, which in this movie is a signal that her beloved Bharat Bhushan is in the coverage area. And that makes Madhubala go crazy alongwith Cuckoo, her friend, who is also riding in the same bullock cart.

This song is written by Qamar Jalalabadi and the music is composed by O P Nayyar.

Song-Sun jaa pukaar (Phagun) (1958) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

sone na doongi aaj
sitaaron ko raat bhar
aanchal pakad liyaa hai
judaayi ki raat kaa
sun jaa pukaar,
sun jaa pukaar,
sun jaa pukaar

o balmaa ye zindagi
do saanson kaa khel
kisko khabar hai saajnaa
honaa ho phir mel
honaa ho phir mel
sun jaa pukaar
sun jaa pukaar,
sun jaa pukaar

prem agan mein jalke main
ho jaaungi raakh
teri gali mein aayegi
udkar meri khaakh
udkar meri khaakh
kar lenaa pyaar,
kar lenaa pyaar,
kar lenaa pyaar

I liked the last few seconds and their “milan” more than the song itself. Madhubala is a sight for sore eyes, especially when she is smiling, laughing or in a playful mood.

So I used to think till yesterday, when I saw the “C-A-T cat, cat maane billee” song picturization. Nutan there made my day. Madhubala was that vivacious in Chalti ka naam gaaDee too, say in haal kaisA hai janaab kaa, but here in this song, Nutan’s impish smiles came in waves.

Thank you Nutan, wherever you are.

I think this song was quite popular. I remember hearing this song from my childhood days.
When I saw this movie a few months back and heard this, I was like “this song is from THIS movie!”. 🙂

Love the bullock cart songs—quintessential India. My three very favorite ones are “O re taal mile” and 2 Teesri Kasam songs. Also like the Manna Dey bullock cart song in Bawarchi. I should make a playlist.
