Barso re bairi badarwaa barso re

Kids of my and earlier generations grew up reading adventure tales where intrepid explorers going deep into Africa would be captured by natives and tied at the stake and the man eating natives would then dance around the stakes as preparation for cooking the captured adventurers in their cooking pots.
This situation offered immense potential to movie makers all over the world, including Indian movie makers. In India, Indian tribals began to be shown dressing and acting similarly in Indian movies.
Here is a song from “Phagun” (1958) where we find Madhubala tied at the stake, with the intention of burning her alive. Apparently Madhubala, a member of the tribe, is being punished because she fell in love with an outsider.
But this being a Bollywood movie, the tribals, holding fire sticks in their hands, allow Madhubala to sing a song. And Madhubala sings this song “barso re haay bairi badarwa barso re”, where she sends SOS to rain clouds. And certainly the rain clouds respond faster than the modern fire brigades. Rain pours in torrents and all the fire that was brought to burn her get doused successfully. This is called fire fighting, Bollywood style.
The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist and O P Nayyar composed the music. This song from “Phagun” (1958) is the ninth song that I have posted here, and a few more songs still remain to be posted. That is how big a musical blockbuster this movie was.

Lyrics
aur to koyi nahin sahaaraa
tu hi haath badhaa de
Gangaa Yamunaa ban ke baadal
gham ki aag bujhaa de
o barso re,
haay
bairi badarwaa barso re
barso re,
haay
bairi badarwaa barso re
aaj kisi ke preet nagar mein
lag na jaaye aag
barso re,
haay
bairi badarwaa barso re
barso re
barso re
barso re
barso re
duniyaa waale preet ke dushman
dil tadpaane waale
koyi nahin bujhaane waalaa
sab hain lagaane waale
barso re,
haay
bairi badarwaa barso re
aaj kisi ke preet nagar mein
lag na jaaye aag
barso re,
haay
bairi badarwaa barso re
barso re
barso re
barso re
barso re
angaaron ki doli laayaa
janam janam kaa saathi
maut kaa ghoonghat le kar main bhi
piyaa milan ko jaati
barso re,
haay
bairi badarwaa barso re
aaj kisi ke preet nagar mein
lag na jaaye aag
barso re,
haay
bairi badarwaa barso re
barso re
barso re
barso re
barso re
barso re
