Hullo Atuldom
Recently, I saw a very famous song of the 1970s and was shocked to see it was missing from our blog. I am talking of the song “Soyi Ja Tara” and it’s sad version ‘Jagi Ja Tara’ from the film “Mastaana” (1970).
The film had seven songs of which the following are there on the blog.

The songs were written by Anand Bakshi & composed by Laxmi-Pyare. The songs were in the voices of Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohd Rafi & Mukesh.
Mastaana had Mehmood- Padmini -Bharathi- Vinod Khanna in prominent characters with Rehman, Shyama, Manorama, Leela Mishra in supporting cast. Baby Bobby was the main character of all the characters in the film, the child was billed as “wonder kid”. The movie was directed by A. Subba Rao, produced by Premji.
The film had Mehmood playing a character which was not meant to tickle the audience’s funny bone. He played Satya who is a kind-hearted common man who takes a liking to the poor-little-rich girl Naintara. Naintara’s parents are too busy to give her time, employ a nanny (Manorama) to look after her. The little girl feels comfortable in Satya’s JHOPDI as compared to her ALISHAAN MAHAL. She sleeps peacefully when Satya sings a lorie.
Today’s song is that lorie. It appears twice in the film. Satya sings it a second time when Naintara is terribly ill and doctors say “isko dawa ki nahin dua ki zaroorat hai!” Actually, Naintara is the inspiration for Satya to study, so that he can get a job. He walks in to Naintara’s house to show her that he has completed his studies and got a job as a constable. He comes in Uniform and is saddened to see the child is ill. That is when he sings the sad version.
We have had some classic films and songs where Mehmood and Kishore Kumar have collaborated. We have had the duo make us laugh in ‘Pyar Kiye Jaa’, ‘Padosan’, ‘Bombay To Goa’ etc. But they have also made us somber with ‘Jai bholenath jai ho prabhu’. The songs in this post are of the somber category. And Kishoreda has excelled in this too.
We are remembering Kishoreda today on his 39th death anniversary. It is shocking that we have been without this actor, singer, producer and director for this many years. I don’t think anything that we say about the Kishore da has not been said before. That is why I am getting directly to the song
