Chaar patti kaa nishaan neeche paan ki dukaan

Posted on: August 12, 2010

When I was a youngster in my teens, I was under the impression that old songs meant boring songs, which were mostly like Ghazal, sad songs etc. But it is only much later that I realised that some wonderful light hearted songs too were created those days. I have already posted many of them in this blog.

In fact, with actors like Kishore Kumar, Johny Walker, Mehmood etc, one was never short of light hearted songs in those days.

Here is a comedy song from “Ghar Ki Laaj” (1960). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. I can identify Johny Walker, but who is the lady who lip syncs in this song in Asha Bhonsle’s voice ? Can anyone identify her. I am dying to know who she is.
PS- She is Shiela Kashmiri. I thank Vanraj for identifying her.

The picturisation of the song is as funny as the lyrics of Rajinder Krishan. In this song, the girl is giving Johny Walker the address of her home- “signal above, betel shop below- remember this is the address” and her beloved is not too enthusiastic at the prospect of visiting her home since it means he has to come across a fierce mustachioed watchman. The exchanges between the two makes this a great fun song.

Ravi is the music director.

I became aware of this song thanks to the farmaish of Peevsie’s mom.

song-Chaar patti kaa nishaan (Ghar Ki Laaj) (1960) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

Chaar patti kaa nishaan
neeche paan ki dukaan
mere pyaar ka makaan
sainyya yaad rakhna
tere daddy ka darbaan
moonchhon walaa hai pathan
nahin milna aasaan
gori yaad rakhnaa

chaar patti kaa nishaan
neeche paan ki dukaan
mere pyaar ka makaan
sainyya yaad rakhna
tere daddy ka darbaan
moonchhon walaa hai pathan
nahin milna aasaan
gori yaad rakhnaa

daddy ji ki baat ka tu dil mein naa laa
Majnu ka naam leke seedha chalaa aa
daddy ji ki baat ka tu dil mein naa laa
Majnu ka naam leke seedha chalaa aa
seedhi tarah aane me hai khatra badaa
milne ka aur koi rastaa bataa

aaja tere qurbaan
leke hatheli pe jaan
yahi pyaar ki pehchaaan
sainyya yaad rakhnaa
tere daddy ka darbaan
moonchhon walaa hai pathan
nahin milna aasaan
gori yaad rakhnaa

chaar patti kaa nishaan
neeche paan ki dukaan
mere pyaar ka makaan
sainyya yaad rakhna

batiyaan banaao naa ji badh-badh ke
dar pe lage hain taale Aligarh ke
batiyaan banaao naa ji badh-badh ke
dar pe lage hain taale Aligarh ke

chhat pe utaar de dakota dil ka
udan-khatole se tu aajaa chadhke
hogaa neela aasmaan
dil waalon ki udaan
phir dekhega jahaan
gori yaad rakhnaa

hogaa neela aasmaan
dil waalon ki udaan
phir dekhega jahaan
sainyya yaad rakhnaa
tere daddy ka darbaan
moonchhon waalaa hai pathan
nahin milna aasaan
gori yaad rakhnaa

chaar patti kaa nishaan
neeche paan ki dukaan
mere pyaar ka makaan
sainyya yaad rakhna

I think the actress singing & dancing with Johnny Walker is Sheela Kashmiri. She acted in around fifteen to sixteen films during early sixties.

Please correct the lyrics in title of the post and wherever you’ve mentioned… Its always “Chaar Batti Ka Nishaan” not “Laal Batti Ka Nishaan”..

Corrected !
Indeed the word is “Chaar ” when I listened to it closely. Thanks for pointing it out. By the way, what exactly would be “chaar batti” ka nishaan ? could it be “Chaar patti”. I think that would make more sense for a “paan ki dukaan”.
