Jhoom jhoom ke do deewaane gaate jaayen gali gali

Posted on: August 18, 2010

“Mastaanaa” (1954) was a movie starring Motilal, Nigar Sultana, Chandrashekhar,Kuldip Kaur, Sundar,Gope etc.

This movie was unsuccessful at the box office but going by the songs of this movie, the movie deserved better fate. But then most movies with Madan Mohan’s music ended up failing at the box office.

Here is a “roadside tamasha” song from this movie. It must be one of the earliest such songs in Hindi movies. It shows a kid (any idea who he is) and Motilal singing and dancing with people gathered around them to see their performance. Those were the days when shooting would take place on the streets of Bombay and real life public would gather to watch the shooting. This actually looks like one such shooting on a Bombay street. The place looks vaguely familiar and perhaps those familar with Bombay may be able to tell us what place it is.
PS-The kid is Master Romi. I thank Mr Vanraj for this information.

The song is sung by Laxmi Shankar and Rafi. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and Madan Mohan composed the music.

Lyrics

jhoom-jhoom ke do deewaane gaate jaayen gali-gali
apni dhun mein masti kaa paighaam sunaayen gali-gali
jhoom-jhoom ke do deewaane gaate jaayen gali-gali
apni dhun mein masti kaa paighaam sunaayen gali-gali

duniyaa waalon
duniyaa waalon
pa dha pa dha pa dha pa dha
ga re ga re ga re
sa re sa re sa re
ga ma pa dha sa
duniyaa waalon
ye duniyaa hai basti kiske baap ki
aaj agar hai kal naa hogi
yahaan zaroorat aap ki
yahaan zaroorat aap ki
jhoom-jhoom ke do deewaane gaate jaayen gali-gali
apni dhun mein masti kaa paighaam sunaayen gali-gali

naa jaane ye moorakh duniyaa
paise ki kyun daas hai
ho
naa jaane ye moorakh duniyaa
paise ki kyun daas hai
chaar rotiyaan ek langoti
baaqi sab baqwaas hai
baaqi sab baqwaas hai
jhoom-jhoom ke do deewaane gaate jaayen gali-gali
apni dhun mein masti kaa paighaam sunaayen gali-gali

aag pet ki kyaa-kyaa maange
aag pet ki kyaa-kyaa maange
roti ke do tukde
roti ke do tukde
sa re ga ma
re ga ma pa
ga ma pa dha
ni dha pa ma
ga re sa
deewaane ko mastaane ko
deewaane ko mastaane ko
baat ye dil ki kahne do
mahlon waalon mahal ke neeche
kutiyaa ko bhi rahne do
kutiyaa ko bhi rahne do
jhoom-jhoom ke do deewaane gaate jaayen gali-gali
apni dhun mein masti kaa paighaam sunaayen gali-gali
jhoom-jhoom ke do deewaane gaate jaayen gali-gali
apni dhun mein masti kaa paighaam sunaayen gali-gali
