Kuchh kahen to khafaa chup rahen to khafaa

Posted on: August 17, 2010

“Ek Shrimaan Ek Shrimati” (1969) is a movie that has so many fantastic songs in it that I wonder why this movie is not all that well known. Considering how songs played major parts in the success of movies, this movie should have gone on to become a major hit on the basis of its music alone.

Well, this movie had come at a time when there was a glut of quality music, and so music itself was not enough to carry the day for the movie unless the movie itself had some quality content in it to distinguish it from the herd. And with Shashi Kapoor and Babita in lead roles, I fail to see how this movie could have survived against the surge of Rajesh Khanna wave that had hit the nation like a tornado and swept everything else away.

With the benefit of hindsight, it appears that the movie was not all that bad, it is just that the audience had better options available with them at that time.

Those days, I was not even aware of too many songs of this movie, and the song under discussion was one that I did not even hear at that time. Now that I have watched this song, I find that it is a supeb song, and this song would have done very well in another era and may be with other actors. 🙂

The song is a jeep song. Shashi Kapoor and Babita are seated in an open jeep. One can understand the jeep not having roof, but it does not have doors too. This jeep song is a teasing song too, and the way Shashi Kapoor lunges towards Babita, and Babita backs away, I was afraid that the dear lady would get thrown out of the jeep.

The song written by Rajinder Krishan is very much a teasing song, as mentioned earlier, which was a prescribed manner of romancing a girl in Bollywood movies. Unlike normal girls, the girl would express her displeasure only for a few minutes and would all of a sudden given her approval on the penultimate line of the song. And the song lives up to that specification.

Rafi sings the song with his customary elan. Kalyanji Anandji composed this song. This song may have been forgotten , and did not become as popular as it should have, but this song deserves to be better known among music lovers.

song-Kuchh kahen to khafaa chup rahen to khafaa (Ek Shrimaan Ek Shrimati) (1969) Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

Kuchh kahen to khafaa
chhup rahen to khafaa
kuchh kahen to khafaa
chhup rahen to khafaa
haaye kaise sitamgar se paalaa padaa
paas aane na de
ho
door jaane na de
kaise anjaan dilbar se paalaa padaa
kuchh kahen to khafaa

ye aankhon ka suroor nayaa nayaa hai
ye jawaani ka guroor nayaa nayaa hai
ye aankhon ka suroor nayaa nayaa hai
ye jawaani ka guroor nayaa nayaa hai
abhi baali umar ka hai aakhri kadam
yehi soch ke sitam sahe jaate hain ham
yehi soch ke sitam sahe jaate hain ham
kuchh kahen to khafaa
kuchh kahen to khafaa
chhup rahen to khafaa
haaye kaise sitamgar se paalaa padaa
paas aane na de
ho
door jane naa de
kaise anjaan dilbar se paalaa padaa
kuchh kahen to khafaa

ye maanaa ke huzoor hain jaane chaman
badhke kali se hai naazuk badan
ye maanaa ke huzoor hain jaane chaman
badhke kali se hai naazuk badan
kadar dil waalon ki kuchh keejiye
karam keejiye aur duaa leejiye
karam keejiye aur duaa leejiye
kuchh kahen to khafaa
kuchh kahen to khafaa
chhup rahen to khafaa
haaye kaise sitamgar se paalaa padaa
paas aane naa de
ho
door jane naa de
kaise anjaan dilbar se paalaa padaa
kuchh kahen to khafaa

kal ki hai baat
huye ho jawaan
uthaaye huye ho magar aasmaan
kal ki hai baat
huye ho jawaan
uthaaye huye ho magar aasmaan
chaar din mein qayaamat machaaye huye ho
saari duniya ko peechhe lagaaye huye ho
saari duniya ko peechhe lagaaye huye ho
kuchh kahen to khafaa
kuchh kahen to khafaa
chhup rahen to khafaa
haaye kaise sitamgar se paalaa padaa
paas aane na de
ho
door jaane naa de
kaise anjaan dilbar se paalaa padaa
kuchh kahen to khafaa
