Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Shokh nazar ki bijliyaan

Posted on: September 8, 2010

I was under the impression that “Wo Kaun Thi” (1964) was all about Lata-Madan Mohan compositions. There were as many as three of them. But there were other singers in this movie as well.

Asha Bhonsle too sang a couple of songs in this movie. They may be relatively lesser known, but they too were significant songs in their own way. I have posted a western dance song from this movie, viz Tiki riki tiki riki taakuri (Woh Kaun Thi) , which is quite a wonderful song sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. I had said that this song was ahead of its times.

Here is another lovely Asha Bhonsle song from “Woh Kaun Thi” (1964). It is a solo song sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised in snowy ice of Shimla on Praveen Chaudhary and Manoj Kumar.

Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist of this delightful song.

Lyrics

(From Video – Film Soundtrack)
haa..aa

aa..hha ha ha ha ha ha..aa
ohho ho ho ho ho ho..oo
hhaa hhaa hhaa hhaa hhaa hhaa haaa
haa haa haa haa haa haa haa..aa
shokh nazar ki bijliyaan
dil pe mere giraaye jaa
meraa na kuchh khayaal kar
tu yoon hi muskuraaye jaa
shokh nazar ki bijliyaan

jaag uthi hai aarzoo
jaise chiraagh jal pade
ab to wafaa ki raah me
hum tere saath chal pade
chaahe hansaaye jaa hamen
chaahe hamen rulaaye jaa
shokh nazar ki bijliyaan
dil pe mere giraaye jaa
shokh nazar ki bijliyaan

ho haa haa haa haa haa
aa haa haa haa haa haa aa..aa
aa haa haa haa haa haa haa haa haa haa..aa

manzil e ishq door hai
door bahut hi door hai
aa mera haath thaam le
rooh thakan se choor hai
apne jahaan ko chhod kar
mere jahaan pe chaaye jaa
shokh nazar ki bijliyaan
dil pe mere giraaye jaa
shokh nazar ki bijliyaan

(From Audio – Extra Antaraa) (Lyrics Provided by Prakashchandra)
chain kahin kisi ghadi
aaye na tere bin mujhe
kaash main is jahaan se
chheen loon ek din tujhe
main tere saath saath hoon
chaahe nazar bachaaye ja
shokh nazar ki bijliyaan
dil pe mere giraaye jaa
meraa na kuchh khayaal kar
tu yoon hi muskuraaye jaa
shokh nazar ki bijliyaan

It’s one of my favorite Asha solos. The music is so unique and fun to listen to.

Here are the words that you had question mark on.

manzil-e-ishq door hai door bahut hi door hai
aa mera haath thaam le rooh haqan se choor hai
apne jahan ko…

Btw, did you know the song has a third stanza? It goes like so:

chain kahin kisi ghadi aaye na tere bin mujhe
kaash main iss jahaan se chheen loon ek din tujhe
main tere saath saath hoon chahe nazar bachaaye jaa
shokh nazar ki bijaliyaan…

I searched for the audio/video that has this but I can’t find it online. If I do find it, I’ll post on here.

Thanks for sharing this, Atul. 🙂

Yup. Here is the audio. https://youtu.be/MCNUu59vNW4

I almost thought they were two songs. Does the song in the movie have three stanzas? 🙂

Btw, great blog Atul. I love the Tamil version of this song as that was the first I heard and when I grew up my mum said the movie was a remake of the hindi film hence the song. I dug this gem out. Fab.

Thanks a lot for your appreciation.

thanks kanan. even i was thinking that there is more to this song

Question: Why the hell is the lady pushing Manoj Kumar in the chair, as if he is ian invalid?

Like the song though. Did see the movie years and years ago, but completely forgot raveen Choudhury. Sadhana was the female lead, wasn’t she?

many observations after seeing the song closely today.
the lady is not skating on the ice— in the beginning of the song she has 3 people on her either side and she is walking (probably she required physical support to balance herself). than later on the support system is a Rope or Mr. Manoj Kumar

He is not invalid; he (and also she) just doesn’t know how to skate on the ice!

This is a very popular and delightful Asha number under Madan Mohan’s direction. It seems that in the early Madan Mohan films, whenever the song was serious or filmed on the leading lady, Lata Mangeshkar was often the chosen one to sing it; Asha generally got the lighter songs or the ones for the supporting actresses.

Incidentally, another Asha song for Madan Mohan, Jhumka Gira Re from Mera Saaya filmed on the secondary part of Sadhana’s double-role, is perhaps commercially the most popular Madan Mohan composed song (surpassing the great Lata classics) released during his lifetime.

beautiful song.

[…] Lata was Madan Mohan’s female singer of choice. But Madan Mohan has created some nice songs with other female singers as well. For example, the most popular Madan Mohan song at Binaca geetmala during Madan Mohan’s life time was not a Lata song but an Asha Bhonsle song, viz Jhumka gira re Bareli ke bazaar me(Mera Saaya). With ASha Bhonsle, Madan MOhan has also come with with a fabulous song like Shokh nazar ki bijliyaan (Woh Kaun Thi) . […]

what about this stanza you are missing

chain kahin kisi ghadi aae na tere bin mujhe
kaash main is jahaan se chhin lun ek din tujhe
shokh nazar ki……………..

***********************************************

I will include this stanza in the lyrics when I can get hold of this song with this stanza.

lyrics of missing stanzaa of the song :

“chain kahin kisi.. ghadi
aaye na tere bin mujhe
kaash main iss jahaan se
chheen loon ek din… tujhe
main tere saath saath hoon
chaahe nazar bachaaye jaa…
shok nazar ki bijliyaan
dil pe mere giraaye jaa……aaaa
mera na kcuch khayaal kar
tu yun hi muskuraaye jaaa..
shokh nazar ki bijliyaan”

Does anyone has all 3 stanzas in 1 track….I too have only 2 stanzas ie 1st one jaag uthi hain aarzoo and 2nd one which I have is Chain kahin kisi ghadi…The other stanza Manzilien ishq door hain is missing… If anyone has it, plss send me in mp3 format ie on kaleabhinish@yahoo.co.in

Dear All,

I have now updated the post with the audio version of the song, which has a different second antaraa. This extra antaraa has been mentioned by many readers in their comments above. I thank Abdul Kareem Sb for sending us the link to the audio version of this song, and our Prakash ji for the lyrics of the third Antaraa.

The actual situation is that the film soundtrack has two antaraas. The version from the 78 rpm record also has only two antaraas. The difference is that the second antara in the 78 rpm recording is different from the second antaraa in the soundtrack.

There is no single long version of the song which contains all the three antaraas. One can do an edit and splice to create a longer version. The three antaraas have not been officially released together as a single song.

I would remind readers of another similar situation – the title song of ‘Ye Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke’. The film soundtrack has two antaraas, and the 78 rpm also has two antaraas. Similar situation – the second antaraa in the two versions is different. There is no official release of a single long song with three antaraas. Some one has posted an edited version on YouTube which has three antaraas together, but that is not an official version.
