Thodaa ruk jaayegi to tera kyaa jaayegaa

A lot of actors have some mannerism or “trademark” that tends to be their distinguishing feature. It could be a style of dialogue delivery, it could be the way they shake their head, it could be the way they walk.

Sometimes it may be unintentional to start with but once the actor finds that it is getting popular with the public, he or she stresses and sometimes stretches that “trademark”. It then could easily degenerate into hamming. I feel Rajesh Khanna, towards the mid-late 70s, got caught up in the success of all his “styles” and somewhere the actor Rajesh Khanna just faded away into the background.

Shashi Kapoor had his own fan following. Yes, he may not have been quite the superstar that his two older brothers were but he was a star in his own right.

Shashi’s trademark was probably his smile (showing that dimple) and that walk of his. He had a particular way of walking, a particular way of shrugging his shoulder and of swaying his body. I think if one practices this regularly, it could be good exercise for the shoulders.

Anyway, this was special to him and has been copied by plenty of Shashi mimics. It can be seen in plenty of Shashi movies. And of course in many of his songs.

One of the songs, for example, is “thoda ruk jaayegi” from Patanga (1971). The movie itself was not very popular (if I remember right) but this song by Rafi saab was a big hit. The song is catchy, the music is lively. It is by Shankar Jaikishen. Considering Jaikishen passed away in 1971, this was probably amongst his last movies.

In this song, Shashi is in his element, using all his “trademark” walking styles to get the heroine, Vimmi. She is totally unmoved though. She continues to resist him all the way and, towards the end of the song, even steps on his foot (memories of Vyjanthimala stepping on Dev Anand’s foot in “aasmaan ke neeche” (Jewel Thief)). Some will argue that there is a message for Shashi here. Teasing song he may sing, dance like Shammi he may try, but Shammi he sure isn’t. 😀

Vimmi is her usual self. Which is to say, she does no damage to her reputation of “most wooden face ever”. 😀

Anyway, it is a lively song and worth a listen. I hope you enjoy it.

“he may not have been quite the superstar that his two older brothers were but he was a star in his own right. ”

Spent a couple of years in Delhi in the mid-70s. The only names we heard then were Rishi and Shashi (I didn’t even know who Shammi was till recently). And some of the other 70s stars you know–Neetu Singh, Jaya Bhaduri etc…

True, by the mid-70s nobody talked about Shammi or Raj. It was all Shashi and Rishi. Shashi was very prolific too – I think he acted in loads of movies at that time.
