Ye zindagi hai yo-yo

Posted on: September 26, 2010

When I was a kid, I obviously loved to play with toys. One toy that I loved was the one that had a round object attached to an elastic string. You held one end of the strings to your hand and threw the round object away, which would come back to your palm again. This back and forth motion of the object where the object, despite being thrown away always came back to you, like a bad coin or an obedient dog, was a source of great amusement to kids like me.

And inteestingly, we did not know what that plaything was called. I think we knew it by some unique Bihari name which I no longer remember.

Only much later I came to know that it was called yo-yo.

And now I find that yo-yo was not a plaything of 1970s, rather it was in existence from a much earlier date.

I never know that this humble yo-yo find a mention in a Hindi song. In fact, this is not just a passing mention, rather the entire song is devoted to yo-yo and the word yo-yo figures in the song almost fifty times.

And who is the actor on whom this fun song is picturised. One would guess a comedian like Johny Walker or Mehmood, but that is not the case. The song is picturised on Manmohan Krishna, who is normally known for playing bit roles of a person who is always miserable and who makes others around him miserable too. So it is a goo change of image for Manmohan Krishna. I in fact never imagined in my wildest of dreams that Mamohan Krishna ever figured in the picturisation of a song.

There is more ! The song is not only picturised on Manmohan Krishna, the song is sung by Manmohan Krishna too. Yes, indeed he is the singer of this fun song.

Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and Anil Biswas is the music director. This song is from “Aaraam” (1951).

Here is this obscure, but fun song from “Aaraam” (1951).

how surprising that man who does a little bit of role as sad person of any role whether garib , paisewalla or orphan or father, uncle and what not of role. but always sad , is given to sing for the character and again he is singing himself. may i request music lovers to tell me whether any film or films where he has sung?

There are at least three other songs picturised on Mamohan Krishna in other films.
1. “Tu Hindu banega na Musalman banega” – Rafi, N. Dutta, Sahir Ludhiyanvi from “Dhool ka Phool” – already mentioned in an earlier comment.
2. “Basti basti, parbat parbat” – Rafi, Madan Mohan, Sahir Ludhiyanvi from “Railway Platform”.
3. “Badi der bhai” – Rafi, Shankar Jaikishan, Shailendra from “Basant Bahar”. Binaca geetmala -1957:22

In the other song from Aaram – “Shukriya ae pyaar teraa”, I believe the following can be observed. Manmohan Krishna introduces Talat Mehmood and then accompanies him as a tabla player.
