Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Jo tum todo piyaa

Posted on: October 5, 2010

In case of most Hindi songs, lyrics of the song are written by the lyricist hired for this specific purpose. But there are occasions when the lyrics are already available and they are written by persons who lived much before Hindi movies came into existence.

One such person is Meera Bai. She lived hundreds of years ago, and she was a devotee of Lord Krishna. She forsake the world for Krishna and she would spend her time singing Krishna Bhajans, we are told.

There are quite a few songs in Hindi movies which are Meera Bhajans written by Meera Bai. I have posted a couple of them in this blog in the past.

Here is another Meera Bhajan from a Hindi movie. This is in fact a very well known song from “Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje” (1955). It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Sandhya and V Shantaram. Music is composed by Vasant Desai.

Here is this very well known Meera Bhajan which has by now gone on to become a common Meera Bhajan for religious occasions.

Song-Jo tum todo piyaa (Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje) (1955) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Meera Bai, MD-Vasant Desai

Lyrics

Krishna
jo tum todo piyaa
main naahin todoon re
tori preet todi Krishna
kaun sang jodoon
jo tum todo piyaa
main naahin todoon re
tori preet todi Krishna
kaun sang jodoon

tum bhaye taruvar main bhayi pankhiyaa
tum bhaye sarovar main bhayi machhiyaa
aaa aaa aaa
tum bhaye giriwar main bhayi chaaraa
tum bhaye chandaa main bhayi chakoraa
jo tum todo piyaa
main naahin todoon re
tori preet todi Krishna

tum bhaye moti Prabhuji
ham bhaye dhaagaa
tum bhaye sonaa
ham bhaye suhaagaa
aaa aaa
daayi Meeraa ke Prabhu Brij ke waasi
suno he Gopaal
suno he Gopaal
tum mere Thaakur
main teri daasi
main teri daasi
jo tum todo piyaa
main naahin todoon re
tori preet todi Krishna
kaun sang jodoon
Krishnaa
kaun sang jodoon

Meera ke Prabhu Brij ke waasi
Giridhar ho
Giridhar ho
Giridhar ho
Meera ke Prabhu Giridhar Giridhar
Meera ke Prabhu Giridhar Giridhar
Meera ke Prabhu Giridhar Giridhar
Giridhar ho
Giridhar ho
Meera ke Prabhu Brij ke waasi
Giridhar ho
Giridhar ho
Giridhar Giridhar
Giridhar Giridhar
Giridhar Giridhar
Giridhar Giridhar

Nothing can go wrong once lyrics gets Lataji voice.

Another famous Meera-ji bhajan is “aai ree main to prem deewaani”, and used in many movie.

Lovely but my favorite Lata Meera bhajan is “Mhara re giridhar gopal”–hard to sing and sublime. (I don’t believe it is a movie song though–its on Youtube)

Same bhajan Silsila movie mein bhi hai ..use bhi Lata ji ne hi gaya hai.

Thanks, Atul, for this lovely bhajan! Though Lata sang this same song in Silsila, I personally like this version better (maybe because I heard this in my childhood and my mother used to sing this version?). Is there any way you can find the songs sung by M.S.Subbulakshmi for the Hindi version of the movie Meera, which was released in the 40’s, I think? We used to have the songs on an old LP in my home, and I couldn’t find the movie as a DVD in India.

Thanks again for this song, Atul!

The male actor in the song ‘jo tum todo piya’ is Gopi Krishna and not V.Shantaram, who had directed the film.

The same bhajan is sung by Vani Jayram in Meera the MD being Pt RaviShankar.
The raga in JJPB is Bhairavi whereas that in Meera is Yaman.
