Chaupaati pe kal jo tujhse aankh matakka ho gayaa

Posted on: October 9, 2010

“Afsaanaa” (1951) was a B R Chopra movie and it was one of the first lost and found movies in Hindi movie history. This movie, which was a huge hit during its time starred Ashok Kumar, Veena,Jeewan,Cuckoo ,Pran, Kuldeep Kaur etc.

The movie was a musical blockbuster as well. Many of the songs of this movie are remembered even to this day. I have discussed as many as seven songs from this movie already in this blog.

Here is the eighth song from this movie. Unlike the other songs already posted, this song is not really all that well known. In fact, I think that this song is not at all known to majority of music lovers.

But that does not mean that it is a lesser song vis a vis the other songs of this movie. Not at all. In fact, I think that this song is a gem ! This song shows Ashok Kumar and Veena seated in a box in a theatre. Ashok Kumar makes passes at her, and she asks him to concentrate on the show.

The show at the stage consists of a lovely performance of a boy (Jeewan ? ) and girl (Cuckoo) who are in love with each other and meet each other on the sly (which is the only way for a boy and a girl to meet each other in India). The song is a wonderful song to listen to, the likes of which have not heard before. The song is sung by Rafi and Shamshad Begam. Someone called Chandar Oberoi has written the lyrics and he has done a great job in it. What fantastic lyrics he has written ! And music is by Husnlal Bhagatram who could be relied upon to come up with extremely hummable compositions.

I had discovered this wonderful song a few months back nad I rhad esolved that this song was one day going to be a century song in this blog.

Century song, did I say ? Yes, I did. yes, this song marks yet another century for this blog. This song is 3100th song of this blog.

These days I am managing to score centuries in reasonably quick time and this century came up in twenty days. It is nice to be able to post songs at a good rate and I have managed to maintain this rate for the last four hundred songs or so. It is essential to maintain this rate if I want to cover all the great songs that are yet to be posted.

I take this opportunity to thanks all my visitors who keep encouraging me throough their comments, farmaishes, suggestions, nagging 😀 , voting on the songs and just by visiting the blog.

This blog uis meant to be a blog of old songs which means that it takes a certain kind of visitors to visit this blog. It is those people who have lived in the golden era of Hindi movie songs and who are interested in reliving that era by listening to the songs (and watching them) by visiting this blog.

In the past few months, I have tried to try and improve the blog based on visitors’ feedback. That is how the farmaish page (a hugely popular portion of the blog now) has come up. I have also added a stats page where one can get a summary of the number of songs of various singers , lyricists and music directors that I have posted in this blog.

The blog still has a long way to go, seeing the pending list of farmaishes. My aim is to one day post so many songs that the farmaish senders will struggle to give the list of songs to be posted. That day is a long way off, of course, since there are far too many great songs that have been created. So till that stage comes, the farmaish givers may have to be patient.

I take this opportunity to thank my guest posters (Raja, Greta and Santosh Ojha) who have been kind enough to add variety and class to this blog by their wonderful posts. In fact, the last three century marking posts were by these three guest posters. I hope that this blog will be blessed with more contributions by them as well as by other members who are willing and interested.

This is OUR blog and I hope we will continue to regularly add and enrich the collection of songs in this blog.

I once again thank all my well wishers on this occasion.

Here is the 3100th song of this blog. Have a happy listening (and viewing).

song-Chaupati pe kal jo tujhse aankh matakka ho gayaa(Afsaanaa) (1951) Singers-Rafi, Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Chandar Oberoi, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram

Lyrics

-aaj hamaare naseeb kaise jaage jo aap tashreef le aayine
-baba ne majboor kiyaa , chali aayi
-kaash aap har roz isi tarah majboor hoti rahen
-show dekhiye

Chaupaati pe kal jo tujhse
aankh matakka ho gaya
aankh matakka ho gaya
paani poori bhool gayaa main
hakka bakkaa
hoy hakka bakka ho gayaa
Chaupaati pe kal jo tujhse
aankh matakka ho gaya
haay
aankh matakka ho gaya
hmm
ae haan

tere jaise do takke Majnu
haath mein le dil phiraa karen
dil phiraa karen
tere jaise do takke Majnu
haath mein le dil phiraa karen
dil phiraa karen
ladki dekhi jhat dil phenka
dooji jhoothi(?) maara karen
goya main hoon aisaa waisaa
ek uchakka ho gaya
ek uchakka ho gaya
haaye kismat phhooti
tujhse aankh matakka
hoy aankh matakka ho gayaa
Chaupaati pe kal jo tujhse
aankh matakka ho gaya
aankh matakka ho gaya

khoon ke har katre pe
tera naam dikhaaun main rani
haay naam dikhaaun main rani
naa naa rasiyaa
naa naa rasiyaa
rehne do
main maan gayi
main jaan gayi
tu mere main teri
lo ikraar ye pakka ho gayaa
ikraar ye pakka ho gayaa
haha kyaa achhaa jo
tujhse aankh matakkaa
hoy aankh matakka ho gaya
Chaupaati pe kal jo tujhse
aankh matakka ho gaya
haay
aankh matakka ho gaya

ghatati(?) si chaandni
machalti umang ho
rut ho suhaani
aur rani mere sang ho
raja mere sang ho
dil ho aitbaar
aur man mein bharaa pyaar
to bahaar hi bahaar hai
bahaar hi bahaar hai
bahaar hi bahaar
baahon mein baahen ho
na baazi adaayen ho
uthti jawaani ho
sadaa si nigaahen hon
dil me ho aitbaar
aur man me bhara pyaar
to bahaar hi bahaar hai
bahaar hi bahaar hai
bahaar hi bahaar

tang mere itni der kyun aayi
phir ye raas rachhayi kyun
waah ri meri chhail chhabili
laaj tujhe naa aayi kyun
kyun ri seelo
ho kyun ri seelo
kisse teraahatta batta ho gayaa
hatta batta ho gayaa
haan haan dadi
usse mera aankh matakka
hoy aankh matakka ho gaya
jaane ko tum chale gaye
dil mera khatta ho gaya
dil mera khatta ho gaya
bana banaaya khel ye saaraa
jaun jupatta (?)
hoy jaun jupatta(?) ho gayaa
Chaupaati pe kal jo tujhse
aankh matakka ho gaya
haay
aankh matakka ho gaya

I think it’s “din ho aitvaar”, and not “dil mein ho aitbaar”, and “jhooti mooti mara karein”.
