Hothon mein aisi baat main dabaa ke chali aayi

Posted on: October 31, 2010

When I post songs in this blog, the easiest part is to find the song to post. I mostly stumble upon songs on youtube or dailymotion and decide to post the song. Sometimes, while posting songs based on farmaishes, I find that locating songs become the most difficult part, in case the song is an obscure song.

After locating the song, I find out the details of the song. In case of better known songs, finding the details is easy, but there are occasions when getting the details of the song becomes the most difficult part.

I then get down to the process of getting the lyrics of the song. In many cases, where the lyrics consists of standard words and the song is of normal length, and the audio quality is decent, listening to the song three to four times times is all that it takes for me to get the lyrics right. But there are cases when the songs are too long, the words are too esoteric and/ unclear and/or the audio quality is not up to the mark. On such occasions, getting the lyrics right becomes a Herculean effort. I have discovered that qawwaalis are the category of songs that are of longest duration and getting the lyrics of a qawwaali right is the toghest task. It means listening to the song upto twenty times or more. That plus the fact that qawwaalis are often upto ten minutes long and moreover one needs to listen to the song upto twenty times means that getting the lyrics of such long songs is not for the faint of hearts.

Having done that, I save the post as draft and move on to some other song and there I follow the same process.

That way, I have several songs ready as draft in my blog at any point of time. At any moment of time, I have about 100 odd drafts of song in the blog.

Normally I do all this in the evenings or in case of holidays at other time of the day too.

When it comes to posting the songs, I do it in the early morning. Of course, I cannot post the drafts just like that, because an important part, viz the writeup is missing from these drafts. In the earlier days, when I posted lesser number of songs every day, coming up with intersting write ups came easy, but that is not always possible for all songs and that too when you aim at posting about half a dozen songs daily.

I often feel quite lazy about the write up and post several songs with hardly any write up. But then I begin to feel as if I did a disservice to songs by not devoting enough attention to their write up.

One occasion when I do not have to worry about the write up is when it is my guest authors contributing write ups. They invariably come up with great write up to accompany the song which every one, including I, enjoy reading.

Instead of getting overawed by the quality of write up of my guest authors, I remind myself that my core competence is not great write up , but my ability to hang on to my resolution. I have resolved to post songs regularly to this blog, and I try to live up to that.

There are occasions when I am able to post at the rate of six to seven songs a day regularly for upto three weeks and that adds up to a century of song in three weeks. On the other hand, there are occasions, when I am unable to find time to post songs at my desired rate. And after I onceagain manage to find time to post songs after such breaks then I find that the the momentum is lost. It again takes me a few days before I can regain the momentum.

When one does not have the momentum, one struggles to find things to write about in a song, even when there could be so many things to say.

Take this song from “Jewel Thief” (1967) for example. Listen to this song and so many thoughts cross your mind. One can immediately notice that various components of the music of this song have been used in future movies like “Sholay”, “Barsaat ki Raat” etc. The song is picturised in North East Frontier parts of India. In fact, I think it is picturised in Sikkim which was not even a part of India those days.

S D Burman, the music director of this movie was born and brought up in those parts and he has made lovely use to the music of those parts in his movies, not only in this movie, but in other movies as well.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist of this song.

The song is a creation of genius and the picturisation of the song is spectacular. I am sure this picturisation must have taken the Indian movie watchers by storm when this movie was first released.
